Fourth of JULY (Here it comes - what's Greywolf going to say?
I don't know.
Honestly. And I say that because I wonder what other people have to say.
I have no idea what I will at some point write about it (for your edification and enjoyment, and so on...)
Surely - it is an occasion based on historic events, but it is also deeply rooted in OUR OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCES.
How we grew up, what our parents were like, what the times themselves were as we went along.
The culture of the USA has itself gone through RADICAL (and debateable) changes since I was a young and impressionable individual. There is rap, there is the fuel crunch, there are ecological concerns, world conflicts (like there was ever a time when there were NOT any) and more...
And all of the life experiences that we each went through as we walked the roads that led us each to this particular weekend.
There are two days before the fourth of july -
What does it mean to everyone?
I really want to hear what you think of it TODAY (in the modern age)

The 4th is a holiday to think about what made this country great and a reminder to not loose sight of that, as we move into the uncertainty of our future. A time to revel in our freedoms and a reminder to guard them and never relenquish them no matter what scare tactics are being used. Remember that people who want to take away your civil liberties are not doing it for your own good, they are doing it for theirs.
It is also a great time to suck down some Barbeque and suds.

The Fourth of July -
To me it is a day of celebration. A day to celebrate America.
This may sound corny, but, so what? Let it sound corny.
To me, the United States of America is the GREATEST nation on the planet.
Don't get me wrong. I am not insulting ANYONE when I say that. And no, I'm not trying to start WWIII. I have a great deal of respect for our allies, but, in the same breath, I hold a great sense of condemnation for the cowards and terrorists that have attacked this nation.
I am an American. A true mix of several nations. Ireland. England. Scotland. Germany. A 'Heinz 57' as it were.
Yes, this makes me an American, because my ancestors came here from somewhere else, to find 'a better place'. They found it. They fought for it. They died for it.
We are "The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave!"
Two years ago, I spent the Fourth of July on a houseboat, on Norris Lake, in Tennessee.
To wake up on the Fourth and see all of the people that decorated their boats, houseboats, homes (on shore) and themselves, celebrating our Freedoms. It brought up goose-bumps. . . a tear to the eye. . . and a smile to my face.
Friends having a cook-out, eating great food, having a cool drink to wash down the food. Some fireworks at sundown (and later). Cruising up and down the lake on a houseboat that was decorated and 'decked out' to look like a riverboat and the 'skipper' was dressed up like Uncle Sam!
What memories!
(This IS America!)
America. I DO love her!

I do believe that the Fourth and Memorial Day are two of the most important holidays that we as Americans have. I do have to agree that they are becoming too commercialized, and are starting to loose their meaning as intended, but that shouldn't stop anybody from celebrating them. For me, it's a chance to reflect on where we are and where we would be if nobody stood up and said this has to stop. It's also another chance to say thanks to all the members of the Armed Forces, for keeping this country independant.

Hmm, well theyre tryin to kill fourth of july here, we cant even do the crappy fireworks anymore, i feel bad for the little kids who are going to miss out. I think im going to protest this, maybe with moltovs...
but seriously, im going to stir some crap up about this, they dont take our fireworks and expect us to do nothing. any ideas, right now i think i'll get a bunch of friends to gether and we'll all go in my truck, nuthin like 10 people yelling from the back of a truck to draw some attention
gotta remember its the spirit, not the fireworks, time to find a way to hook the flag up.

where do you live, lead foot? are you talking about fireworks displays or people light them off individually in their back yards? we can only have organized displays, and it's illegal to sell fireworks here in Illinois. Not saying people don't drive 5 minutes across the river to MO,and buy them

The forth is a time to remember the great sacrifices that ALL our service men and women have given. To keep our freedoms and rights in place as our fathers, grandfathers envisioned. The signing of the decleation of independence was a great undertaking for all involved. And we should protect it at all costs.
I agree that most holidays are being forgotten as to why they got started because of commericialism of the holiday. Just about every store in the area is open for business as usual with sales.
