Smog Engine Upgrades

I really wanna get some life into my 351M. I'm going to change out the Crank, Pistons, & Rods to the 400. what could i do about a carb, intake, & cam. I have not been able to find a California Smog Legal Carb and Intake. If anyone knows of a emissions legal carb and intake it would be awesome. It's a 78 F-250 4x4 so it's not gonna every be smog exempt cause of our Governor Arnold. Also any other ways to get some more power out of the ol girl smog legally. I thought about boring .20 over but not sure how that would effect my engine when i tow the usual heavy loads in the middle of summer at 110°. I would like to boost it about 100hp and 120 Ft/LBS if it's possible. Any ideas are Extremely appriciated.

i don't think you can add a 4 barrel intake and carb on a vehicle if it didn't come equiped from the factory..if it were anywhere else but california.24 yrs and older in tx.are you sure about the never being exempt??i can send you some real estate adds...

i'm sure thinking about it for a few reasons. Gas Prices, Dumb Smog Laws, Too many people, and the annoyance of a melting pot city, (no offense to anyone). I'll post the link to the law in a bit.

I'm not sure, but I think the Edelbrock manifold for the 400/351M with EGR, (edl-3771), should be 50 state legal for emissions.

Also, if the manifold is emissions legal for California, then adding a decent cam and carb, you should far exceed your goal for HP and torque.

The cam might be retarded on that engine, but the 351M cam is the best of the truck cams. If you can degree your cam and set it to straight-up, you'll find a lot of power. If you're going to continue to use the EGR, make sure it's not gummed up. To reduce NOx emissions, the factory had the engine tuned real rich to lower cylinder temperatures. That made for a lot of carbon in the exhaust, and that gums up the EGR. So clean up the EGR stuff when you put it back on. If you can re-jet the carb to lean it out, that would probably help.

actually i set it up and tuned the carb and it runs sweet and has a lot of power that i found but it's not enough. Form 8° btdc to 2° ahead it's got tons of power but fuel is killing my and it's my dd. so i figure putting in the 400 parts and cam and such it'll stay about the same milage and give me gobs of power more. and i'll leave my timing set up till i smog it then set it back real quick and return it after. I just finished lifting my truck today so i'm gonna be running 35.5" tires. I bought a 6" and it wound up to be 8" of true lift. So if anyone finds a carb it would be awesome. Thanks so far guys

The Perfomer does have an EGR model and I thought it would be legal in Cal. but you might have to use a smog excempt carb with it. Boring wont get you much. Do just enough to clean up the holes. An aftermarket timing gear set will get rid of the retarded cam timing. You can also use more ignition advance than stock but turn it back for testing. Headers are good but you would need the excemption number for a set with bosses for the air injection pump I think.

The Edelbrock EGR manifold is 50 state legal provided you use the factory 2V carb or equivalent and reinstall the EGR as well as all the other factory emissions parts. It comes with with a 2V adapter and instructions on how to use the factory carb. If you can clean up the emissions then whatever's inside the engine shouldn't be an issue even in Kalifornia.

I know holley makes a 2v Carb that looks stock but it flows at 500cfm...so i guess you could try that, I know the guys from HotRod magazine built up a 400 using a 2v carb so they could get past visual inspections....they built it and it was a 380horse and 425ftlb engine...that might be more than what you are looking for...

your 78 should not have a air pump or cats. you can put any header of your choice on that engine even if there is no carb EO number stamped on it.
