Sanden vs. York Compressors?

Kind of off topic but kind of not. I looked into an aftermarket serpentine kit for my 460 a while back and found that if you had AC you needed to swap a Sanden compressor in place of the York. There were a couple models that could be used. So if you think this is anything you ever might want to do check if this would be necessary for your engine.

I don't know much about the Sanden. But a York 210 has got to be the best thing out there. If you think a York is loud you've never tried an electric one, I can barely hear my york running over the motor at idle. The best thing about a york is it has it's own crank case so you don't need an in-line oiler and it pushes 10 cubic inches of air per revalution.
I've had my york for over a year now, I'm running a 12 gallon tank at 225 psi and I use it pretty regularlly.

Just to add to what Gas hog said, I have a good friend with a super cab that made the switch to that round GM looking compressor (Samden I think?), and he found out quick that the samden would not cool that big cab off like the york did. Not only is the York better made, it cools better also. The only reason I could think of to use that samden, is like Ivan mentioned about using serpentine belts. Even at that, I would do my very best to try to get a serpentine pulley on a york. In my opinion, it's just a better quality compressor.

people complain that the york is too loud or too rough. at some times like at idle it can be but it does not affect operation they also have a 10 cubic inch capacity so it allows a lot more pumping the sanden are good for being smooth but thats it. i would rather have a york that makes a little noise once in a while than have a sanden which can't pump enough refrigerent to cool down my cab and you can mount a york either vertical or horizontal.

My opinion is the complete opposite. I have a factory Sanden on a '90 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and it cools that big space better than the factory York on my '79 F150, which is only a regular cab. The F150 is cold, but the Jeep is even colder. The Sanden is smooth enough that you can't tell if it's engaged or not. The York vibrates enough that I don't like to use the AC around town unless it's really hot. Both run R12 and are fully charged.

A couple of related sidebars: the York came equipped with a diagonal brace to the intake that makes a huge difference, but seems to be missing on a lot of these trucks after 20+ years. If you don't have one, get or make one. Also does anyone know why the harmonic balancer equipped clutch was abondoned on the York, when it so obviously needs one?
