Steve B,
Hit 90p a litre in the Bristol Area. I worked out it's nearer $7.50 a gallon now.
Mind you, my maths is 30 years out of date.

You might want to take a look at the actual wholesale (without tax) price of gasoline in Australia.

You will find that your (higher) gasoline price is more TAX than anything else. In most countries it's the government that is soaking us with high taxes.. The worldwide wholesale price doesn't vary much from country to country except remote areas where there's no refining and the finished product has to be hauled in. European countries are squashing their people the most with the taxes at almost the same price as the wholsale price. You elect your government. They set the taxes with your "approval" as it were.

In Australia with the exchange rate (today) by the way, $1 AUD = $ 0.765802 USD

so......$1.10 AUD = $0.84 USD

And 1 US Gal = 3.785 Liters. so 1 US gallon of AU petrol is about $3.18 per gallon USD
(0.84 x 3.785=3.1794)

According to http://motoring.racv.com.au/racvm/petrol/petrolGuide.cfm#taxed

About half of the Australian fuel price is TAX.

Whenever someone says "you people are lucky....here in the zzzzzzz we have to pay $$$"

I like to point them to this link!

http://www.gaspricewatch.com/gastaxes.asp

This is a fairly outdated chart BUT the rate of change of taxes has been fairly flat over the last several years. The US tax rate (federal) for example has been close to $0.20 per gallon for many years.

Look closely at the TAX EXCLUDED prices. It's about the same!! Those other countries are taxing their people at a MUCH higher rate than here.

They have their own governments to blame for their higher prices!!.....They elected them! It's not the oil companies. Oil companies and distributors do not set tax rates. They do pass them on though...... to YOU and me!

Regards,

Rick

90p? isn't there 100p in a UK pound?

1 UK pound is $1.87 USD.

so 90p per liter is 3.40 pounds(per US gallon) and 3.40 x 1.87= $6.35 USD per gallon!!

In 2001 in the UK, 76% of the price of petrol was tax.

If that were true now (and it's probably higher now), that means that 68p on a liter is tax!

and for a gallon..........in US dollars.........at $6.35 per gallon..........$4.82 is tax!! What's left? In USD, $6.35 (UK) -4.82(UK tax) =$1.53

Now in Washington state we have about $0.28 (state) + $0.18 (federal)=$0.46 for the total tax.

$1.53+$0.46 = $1.99 total price.

HEY! you people in the UK are getting your gasoline a little cheaper than we are in the US!! How can that be??

You have to take out the tax when you compare pricing! don't blame the oil companies for the tax. (your math is not the problem here! we know who to blame!)

Cheers!

Rick

Rick, That is MY point exactly! The european countries are getting a free ride(so to speak) while the USA eats the cost. The problem here is that we are in the middle of a WAR with Iraq and that being said, they have some of the highest producing oil platforms in OPEC. Opec says they cant increase output....BULL*****! They can increase it to whatever they want to. They however are trying to win this WAR with the USA by increasing the price of oil to us.So, now we are _PAYING the other guy to have a war with us....HOW LAME!

This is just my .02 worth,....right or wrong, it's how I feel. Now what did I do with that Vaselene? :P

Thanks for that Rick, told you my math was out of date but I think I may have been confused with the difference between the US and UK gallon.

Hey, 53wa,
You're not the only country fighting in Iraq.

Hellzapoppin,
I apologize. You are CORRECT. We are the leading country in Iraq, with a force in excess of 135,000. The UK has the second highest force in Iraq with close to 8,900. Thank you for your help. I will admit that the war on Iraq is a highly controversial war, but it is what our comander in chief decided to do, and that being said, I support it and our troops. I further commend ALL troops from other countries which are involved in our fight against Iraq. However, the reason Iraq would raise the US prices of fuel is simple...look at the numbers of US troops vs. other supporting countries troops in Iraq. We are the leading force and raising our prices of fuel drasticly affects our ability to PURCHASE fuel and therefore complete military operations etc. It is no secret that most of those middle eastern countries support each other and will stand side by side.

I have to say y'all, (and I'm not banging my own drum either!!)

I was over there in 1990 and I was over there in 2003. (ret in 04 with 24 years USAF) We weren't fighting the Iraqi's (they are quite happy that we kicked out the bad boys!)

And now the Iraqi's themselves are starting to fight the insurgents(they know who they are). The insurgents are mostly from other countries.

Tea-in-the-harbor notwithstanding!!! :-) , The UK is absolutely the best ally we have ever had! bar none!

God Save the Queen!

Rick.

PS....and just so no one will think this is not about old Fords......I'm going back out today and bleed the brakes on my 55 F-600!!

To anyone else who may read this post, I should also say this: This war "against" Iraq, should actually be refered to as a war "FOR" Iraq. That is how a lot of the troops look at it. I have spoken to quite a few of the Stryker birgade troopers and that is how they see this war. They continuously tell me that the Iraqi's know who the insurgents are, and the Iraqi nationals who want their country back help the coalition when they can saftly do so.
