04/05 oil filter RElocation

Hello everyone: I would like to hear if anyone else has trouble with the oil filter removal on the 04 F150 5.4? If so Has anyone RElocated the filter? If so I would really like to hear all the good & bad about it.

I find it fairly easy to change the filter. Get the type of filter wrench that fits over the end of the filter and looks like a small cup. It fits to a 3/8 ratchet. I use this with a 10-12" extension. Quite easy to get to that way. Also the oil runs down the plastic spill channel Ford put under there. Runs down thru a hole in my skid plate. Only time I have trouble is when I get in a hurry and the oil runs toward the front of the truck. Then it drips on the diff.

Have you found a relocator kit for yours? My first oil change is coming up fast. I would like to relocate it at that time. Why they put them in such a stupid location I will never know. It could be worse! The wife's 03 Explorer's oil filter would have some paint removed during install because it was hitting the exhaust manifold. Nothing works better than boiling you oil for a long lasting engine.

I agree with Kingfish51 just get an oil filter wrench that fits over the end of the filter, you can buy one for a few bucks, then it's no trouble at all getting the filter off and on.

Hey Lashlaroo,

What do you mean boiling your oil? What does that do?

It's a joke fujio001. Having the oil filter in contact with the exhaust manifold overheats the oil and causes it to brake down very fast. Plus the oil is the main source of cooling for the engine. so, an explorer with the 4.0L V6 can expect to have engine problems much sooner than one with the 4.6L.

oil filter RElocation

Thanks everyone, Yes to the extension & filter end cap wrench, that's how I was able to turn the filter & out it came. Butt, before I got that far the spot welded center on the ''wrench'' broke loose, So I cleaned the paint off & mig welded the center back on.. Two hours to R&R a oil filter, redickulous!!!! Hence the Q to ''has anyone RE located a oil filter on a 04-05 F150 with the 5.4......Jeg's & Summit both offer a universal kit, I will be ordering one ''soon'' To everyone in Ford Land Thanks.

One thing I should have mentioned. If this was your first oil change, they put the filters on dry, so they are a BEAR to get off. After that, if you lube the seal, it isn't a problem.

I had a heck of a time getting mine off the first time too, but its been no problem since. Moss Motors has a relocation kit for between $65 - $87. It's in their catalog.
