Smile O2 Sensor Problem and Flashing OverDrive light...RESOLVED! :)

Hi Everyone,

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone on the list as I wouldn't have figured this one out without you guys (and ladies).

I have a 2002 F-150 with the Triton V8 with about 90k miles on it. Recently my truck engine light came on and the codes were P0135, P0155, P0141, and P0161. From what I understand, it was saying that all (4) O2 Sensors located on the exhaust were bad. At this point, the truck was still running fine so I didn't worry too much about it.

This morning, however, all he11 broke loose. While driving on the Interstate, my truck shifted into 2nd gear and the Overdrive light started flashing. It was running so rough when taking off that I didn't think I would make it home. I limped the truck home thinking I had severe transmission problems.

I cleared the codes by pulling the negative terminal off of the battery and turning the lights on for five minutes (from a post in the forums). I putted to AutoZone to retrieve 11 codes. Four of the codes are listed above. The others were...

P0443 Evap Emm Control System
P1451 Manufacter Control Aux Emm Control
P1747 Manufacter Control Transmission
P0755 Shift Siliniod B Malfunction
P0403 EGR Flow Control Module
P0743 Torque Convertor Circuit Elec

Please excuse the spelling errors...

Searching through the forums kept pointing to (1) common issue - a wiring problem. I was hoping it was something that simple as anything to do with my transmission would have killed my bank account.

I crawled underneath the truck and found an O2 Sensor (rear drivers side) that had touched the exhaust system and melted the wires. I got excited since I was able to find it so quickly. I pulled the O2 Sensor out, cut out the bad spots, and spliced and heat-shrinked them back together. I reinstalled it hoping the sensor was still good.

However, this didn't have anything to do with the transmission...or at least I thought so. I got to thinking and figured that if a short happened that maybe a fuse had blown as well. I opened up the owners manual and found the fuse listing for the fuses in the engine capartment.

I found a 15 Amp fuse (number 23 in my manual page 213) that states

HEGO Sensor, Automatic Transmission

Pulling it, I found the fuse was bad. I replaced the fuse and all my problems went away. Talk about being EXCITED!! Truck is now running great, shifts perfectly, and is running better than ever. A trip back to AutoZone showed 'No Codes' and my $2000 transmission job turned out to be resolved with a $15 fuse kit.

I just wanted to take a moment and post this to the forums to maybe help someone else who might encounter the same problem.

Thanks to everyone (and the ford-trucks) for helping me fix my truck.

I am glad to hear you got everything fixed. Most of the time it is something simple.

I know this is an old post, but it helped me with my truck. I had 6 codes and got stranded out in the middle of the woods. Towed it back to my house since it could not move at all and thanks to this thread figured out it was actually 2 blown fuses. Couldnt tell you which ones, i just started checking all of them. My motor would idle fine but once you hid the gas it would start sputtering and stalling and putting it in gear was even worse. So thanks again.
