transmission seal

I have a 98 ranger 2.5 automatic 2wd. Today I was changing the oil and I noticed transmission fluid all over the trans. crossmember and tailshaft. Looks like the rear seal is leaking. It is not too bad at the moment but will have to be replaced soon. Do I have to pull the trans. all the way out to replace it and what all has to be taken apart to put a rear seal in the transmission? Any help offered will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i'm willing to bet that the three rubber shift rail plugs at the top of the transmission are shot. theyre a ford only product and cost about 5 bucks apiece. simply pull the old ones out and put the new ones in. you can also put freeze plugs in there place but you have to remove the tranny. there is a link in the tech info thread at the top of the forum on this subject.

I have an automatic transmission. I assume that you are talking about a manual with shift rails? Thanks for the advice though.

Thanks ken. Would a parts store such as autozone or advanced auto parts rent the special tools or would I have to buy them. I hope I can rent them since this seems easier than I originally thought it would be.
