30-40 mph hesitation

I can't tell from your post whether it seems to be engine or a transmission issue. To start with, the basics -
Check transmission fluid level.
Make sure that the engine is in proper tune.
Fuel filter may need to be replaced.
Start with the easy stuff first before you go throwing money at it. You could also check for any computer codes that may shed some light on the problem.

My 89 did the same thing but I can't guarantee what fixed mine will fix your. It was my fuel pressure regulator. Of course, it could be plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap and rotor or many other things. Ford even has a TSB for plug wires #7 & #8. They cause poor flow if they are crossing each other.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

E4OD drops into overdrive between 35 and 40 MPH under normal driving conditions. Low fluid or fluid that has lost viscosity or even a clogged filter could be the culprit. The engine situation can be checked by pulling codes. Anything that feels like a misfire or stall should trigger computer codes if it has to do with the engine and performance.
