catalytic converter - cheaper source

Hi all,
Looks like one of the catalytic converters on my Mountaineer is shot (hole in side). The replacement price is ~500 from the dealer... has anyone had it done for less elsewhere. Is this something that I could do at Midas or a similar place. I hesitate with a lot of those shops as I got burned badly by one a few years ago... but 500 bucks is a lot of cashola.

thanks,
-JB
