534 gas vs. 3208 cat diesel

Does anyone now the horsepower and torque ratings of both these engines?I'm pretty sure the 534 is about 277 h.p.which is probably more than the cat.Although the cat probably has more torque. What I am trying to figure out is if you had two identical trucks, one with a 534 and one with a 3208 or equivalent engine,in what ways would the two trucks act differently?

The 3208 or equivalent powered truck would be cheaper to operate, and more productive. The 534 truck would be slow, and would be in the gas station more than on the job....

There is a reason NO ONE makes giant gas engines anymore. Yea, I know GM makes their 8.1, but that has been around forever and it is an option in one line of MD trucks, no HDs offer it. All the other stuff is diesel.

Even their 6 liter motor makes 300 HP, so a 534 would find itself outrun buy an engine much smaller these days, if you were to go gas now vs. gas then.

Go to Fords MD site. No gas motors at all. Ditto Freightliner, and on and on.

534s were from the days of 20 cent gas, and they weren't that great even then. (read around these threads from people who actually ran them...)

3208 cats are available from a 160hp non turbo up to 500 hp turbo / intercooled as used in boats.

Like all diesels, they are rated for different horsepower ratings depending upon there expected duty cycle. The heavier the load / more usage, the LESS of a continuous horsepower rating.

There is a big difference the 3208 weighs close to 2000lbs it has a 10 litre displacment. There is no comparison between a 3208 and a 534 its like comparing apples and oranges.

Kind of funny this discussion came up. The Cat 3208 is basically the same as the earlier Cat 1100 series V-8's. This family of diesels came out around 1970, and at first was exclusively used in Ford trucks. In fact, these early Cat V-8's were painted 'Ford Blue' and had a nameplate on the valve cover that read 'Ford V-636 Diesel'! Ford paid Caterpillar to design the 1100 so that they would have a mid-range diesel to compete with the International DV-550 and G.M.C. 637 Toroflow V-8 diesels. The 1100 was designed to fit in trucks designed for the Super Duty V-8's, and I was told use some Super Duty mounts and accessory drives. Some even thought that the Cat 1100 was a diesel conversion of a Super Duty V-8 (It wasn't, I have seen the insides of both and they are very different). An early non-turbo 1100 would have about the same power overall as a 534, though they of course would be geared a bit differently. The Super Duty would have a horsepower advantage, the Cat a torque advantage......

Go With The 3208

I had a 477 in a ford 10wheel dump truck,what a dog....slow
and 3miles to a gallon.it had a 5+4 trans.I just did a swap to a
3208T with a 5 speed allison. All i can say is WOW lots more power
very little road speed change, but i cann pull hills like a wild dog.
My 2 cents stay away from the 534-477

Ford/Caterpillar 1100s, V-636

The availability of the Ford/Caterpillar 1100s and the V-636 were, according to James K. Wagner in his book, Ford Trucks Since 1905:

Cat 1140 (V-150, 150 hp @ 3,200 rpm):
*F-6000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*B-6000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*C-6000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*LN-6000 (1970 to 1974) (took over for the N-6000)

Cat 1145 (V-175, 175 hp @ 3,200 rpm):
*F-6000, 7000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*B-6000, 7000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*C-6000, 7000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*LN-6000, 7000, 8000 (1970 to 1974)

Cat 1150 (V-200, 200 hp @ 3,000 rpm):
*F-7000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*F/T-8000 (January 1968 to 1969)
*C-7000, 8000, CT-8000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*L/LT/LN/LNT-8000 (1970 to 1974)
*LN-7000 (1970 to 1974)

Cat 1160 (V-225, 225 hp @ 2,800 rpm):
*F/T-8000 (January 1968 to 1969)
*C/CT-8000 (January 1968 to 1974)
*L/LT/LN/LNT-8000 (1970 to 1974)

Cat 3208 (also called "Ford V-636" from 1975-86) (175 or 210 hp @ 2,800 rpm NA; 225 or 250 hp @ 2,600 rpm turbocharged):
*F-7000 (1975 to 1979, 1983 to 1990)
*F/FT-8000 (1983 to 1990)
*B-7000 (1975 to 1978, 1983 to 1990)
*C-7000, C/CT-8000 (1975 to 1990)
*L/LN-7000, 8000 (1975 to 1990)
*LT/LNT-8000 (1975 to 1990)

Newbie Needs Help With Engine ID... I Think It's A 534!

Hello!
The Bus God's sent me a real beauty! A 1970 Blue Bird Wanderlodge! I don't have it at my house yet but I have it stored at my buddies business about an hour away. I've only seen it twice myself the first time being when I was rescuing it. The second trip was to secure it and take some Before photos. It had Wandered into limbo about 4 years ago and I literally stumbled upon it on Craigslist.
After making a post on the MAK sight I had a response and the guy said that I most proabably had the 534. I thought it was a 391 going by the records I could find on line but this is where things got interesting!
Within 10 minutes of joining the Wanderlodge site and posting my first thread, I had 4-5 eMails from a guy in Pasadena. He wanted me to call him even thought it was 2:00 am. I did and we talked for at least an hour and I'll spare you the long story but his parents had purchased a new late 60's WL and while he was at the WL factory picking up their new coach he saw the '70 model on display. Now I know what kind of impact they make on me as an adult and I can only imagine how it can effect a 10-12 year old!
Talk about being ectched into your memory!
It turns out that I have an Extremely Rare Prototype (Front Entry-Rear Pusher) of which only 9 where made! I was told that Jimmy Carter had one of them while he was campaining for President but he had it converted to a side entry when BB was repowering it for him. So there's really only 8 of them! I've seen one in Oregon for $17,500.00 and another one in N.C. for $16,000.00 so that make's only 5 left. And it's fairly safe to say that 2-3 of those, if not more, have gone on to the Big Camp Ground In The Sky due to accident, neglect or any of a dozen other reasons!
Well the guy in Pasadena said he'd trade me his fully operational 1980 Blue Bird Wanderlodge for mine! I haven't heard back from him in a few days but I'll do it if he wants to! I'm beggining to wonder if he might have come to his senses... But my coach has more character and it not a Forward Control model either! And it only has 67,*** showing which is believed to be actual!

OK back to the subject. I made a photo album of my Bird and a slide show of it can be seen at the following link:

http://http://cid-c6ec323e6ef26dd8.s...20It%7C6?ref=1

I have some photos of the engine I can send you direct if needed but I'm pretty sure somebody on here has seen one of these before and will know it as soon as they see it! I mean it's as big as the hood on a full size truck! Plus the pulley on the lower right front of the engine looks very similar as does the size and shape of the water pump on a factory photo I have of a 534.
If it wasn't an hour away I could just go and get some engine numbers and find out myself but it's going to be a couple of weeks before I can bring it here due to space limitations.
I'll quit rambling on now and let you go.
Thanks for the help!
Take Care,
Jeff

I have seen several articles of Cat 3208s in Dentsides, I have a pic of one in a F250 with air even, don't know when I came across it though.

cat engine and forward

I sold ford parts from 1986 to 1997 in ford heavy truck in one dealership they use to sell 30 reman v8 cat engines a month this is the only
diesel engine I have ever seen sell so much because it was so unreliable. Most cat engines I came across were 1145,1160 or 3208 the
3208T was not as popular because You had to pay an uprate charge if You turned in a non turbo core. Here is the order things went
cat V636 until 1984 then because of emissions 7.8 Ford newhall brazilian engine now 1992 once again because of emissions replaced
by FD1060 other known as 6BT5.9 cummins option FD1460 other known as 6CT8.3 cummins.
