back-up light and neutral safety switch

Hopping this might help
My son just bought a 72 F-100, we took the steering column apart to fix the turn signals and when it 'popped' a small metal piece fell to the floor. Someone (over the phone) told me they think it was the neutral safety switch. Is there somewhere I can go online to see a picture to confirm if this is the issue I am trying to resolve or not.
Thank you in advance.

Obviously a rookie
Lesson 1 - Spell check before hitting send...
This is the first forum/chat thing I have ever been on, so will take a couple to learn the ropes.
I just wanted to add that our back-up lights were not working either (before we took the steering wheel off) in case that helps determine our problem. We got the new turn signal assembly installed (including wiring harness) and the wheel put back together and now the truck won't even turn over - no sound - nothing...

on the neutral safety switch theres 4 wires, 2 for nuetral and 2 for park.
park and nuetral seem to be the same darn thing. it just allows you to start the truck. so i capped off my park wires and the nuetral ones are always hot. so now i dont have to jiggle the shift lever anymore to get my truck to start. i dont know why anyone would try to start their truck in drive so i dont see a reason for the switch.
i have looked all around underneath the steering column and havent found my reverse light switch. its intermittent and people are too stupid to realize i am backing up without a white light, so i need to locate this sucker

C7TZ-7A247-A .. Neutral/Backup Switch (Motorcraft SW-600)
There is no separate backup light switch..except on 1967/68 F350's.
Neutral switch location 1967/77:
The plastic half moon shaped neutral safety switch mounts on the outside lower portion of the steering column (NOT on the transmission!).
It's activated by an inverted Y shaped lever that snaps on the shift tube
D0TZ-7B097-B .. Lever, Neutral Switch Actuator = From FTE sponsor DIRECT FORD PARTS: Ford suggested retail price: $18.72 / FTE member net: $13.23.
The switch is also still available from Ford, but the website is down so I can't post the list & net prices. .
1978 is the FIRST year the F100/350's have the neutral switch mounted on the transmission.

so then the 2 wires i twisted together are my park/neutral safety switch, and the other 2 wires were the backup lights? after taking the sensor/switch apart and looking at everything it only seems the contacts engage and create a circuit when its either in park or nuetral. i didnt think that sucker could possibly have anything to do with the reverse lights. everybody always used to tell me the reverse lights would just quickly flicker for a moment, so maybe i need to grab those wires and set them up with a custom switch?

I have a 1968 Ford F-100 (360 V8, 3 speed on the tree converted to C6). I found the switch with the 4 wires going to a connector. But it stops there. The steering column was switched to the auto column. Is there a harness I can get so my backup lights work? I've looked through a few of the suppliers with no luck. Thanks.
