Rear End Whine?

A 73 F250 I am looking at has a rear end whine. What does that mean? Is something going to break?

most likely it is low on gear oil. there may be some damage such as excessive wear due to low oil level. overheating may have also occurred which could cause cracks or breakage in the gears. if it is low you need to try to find where it is leaking and fix it asap. you may be ok with fixing the leak and filling the rearend up with new oil. i hope this helps some. good luck, Eddie II

when the rearend in my '78 F-150 started whining, it shortly overheated and boiled the oil in the rearend due to a pinion bearing that went out causing the gear lash to go out of spec causing the whine. I wouldn't bet on your rearend lasting much longer.
