1996 Ford Explorer Side Mirror Installation?

This past weekend someone clipped the sideview mirror on my 96' exlporer (passeger's side) and broke the mirror. It is a power, non-heated mirror. I took the explorer to the dealership and they quoted me $330 to replace the mirror. I found one at a salvage yard much less expensively. However I wanted to find out if anyone has any experience taking the door panel off (to get to the mirror or otherwise) and how difficult that is to do? Also how long time wise? Thanks for your help!

It's actually quite easy. There are 2 screws by the door handle that hold it all together. Remove these. There may be a small trim ring around the handle, too, Gently pop that out. Then there are about 10 or so friction fittings that hold the door in place. Start at the bottom and pull the panel away from the metal. Work you way up slowly and when you reach the top, you gently lift the door upward to remove it from the window seal. Be careful with the plastic nearest the mirror, as there is a hooked piece of plastic that helps hold the door on and it is easily broken. Looks like an upside down "L".

See the attached link for mor info. warning, it's about 1MB.

Red face

I had to do the same thing, but on the driver's side.

To pick up where D-Rock left off. Once the door piece is off you will need to remove the speaker also. the cable connection for the mirror is behind the speaker. Disconnect the cable connection and then remove the bolts (3 if i remember right) and the mirror should come out. reverse the steps for the install of the new mirror.

I followed the Haynes manual when i did it - it wasn't great in terms of the pictures but it definately helped. I would recommend it - it is worth the $15.

good luck
