fuel tank box question.

fuel tank box question.
Im looking to put a fuel/tool combo box on the back of my 70swb. I have found the one I want but all markings say "diesel only". The box is all metal and the only reason I can think of is liability or govt regulations as far as storing gas in a large box in the rear of a truck. Is it a gasket issue? Is it a venting fumes issue? I have inspected the box and can only see one casket on the site fuel gauge. The box is nice and has several threaded ports for lines or venting. (Northern Tool's box) Does anyone know why I cant find a decent box under 500 dollars that is rated for gas???? Other sites will build you one for gosh knows how much!!! Thanks

The ones designed for gas are usually about $400+. They have to pass more things like not leaking in a roll over, being able to withstand an impact without being holed or exploding, being grounded properly, etc. etc. More related to red tape then design because many people (tens of thousands) have designed and welded together their own fuel tanks. Most of it is related to roll over and only leaking a certain amount in so many minutes.

Thanks, I called a manufaturer of tanks and he stated they call them diesel because they can't possibly cover all the fed and state regs for each state. He stated for my appilcation, it should do just fine as long as I provide a way to vent extra fumes. Venting gas cap or use one of the other ports to have a relief value of sorts. Thanks for your feedback. Time to drop some cash. ouch!

another source
70swford, I installed a fuel/tool in my '72 last yr, found it at local RV outlet. 55 gal, but not drilled for fuel gauge sending unit. Some day when its empty, I will do that. (And its washed with soap and water).Remember there are baffles in the bottom, (at least there should be), so when (and if) you drill, the float arm has to drop all the way to the bottom. Not a big deal with the gauge thing with me, I know how far I can go on a gal of gas, and I have plenty of cushion. Oh, ya, it was $500.

more fuel tanks
70swford, also saw those tanks in a Northern Products catalog. Mine is powder coated steel, but they also have them in flat alum, and diamond plate alum. And different sizes. They are a little cheaper, but the shipping is stiff. Maybe you could check out their website. www.NorthernTool.com

Got one!
Finally got a box of the weekend from the NTool. Word to the wise, if your going to buy one, inspect it closely first. I looked at three in Houston but regected them for so-so construction (welding issues). In San Antonio I had to look at two before I bought one of them. It seems the product at NT is sometimes not put together as well as I would like considering your going to have to shell out 500 bucks. Oh and one other thing, NT has a problem with getting the catalog numbers correct. They didn't have my box but after a long search, it was under another number, what a nightmare!!
All is good now! Thanks baitmaster and rebocardo for all your input.

70, dont let that tank run dry, or that $100 bill in your pocket will be gone! I mentioned that my tank combo is powder coated, but am thinking about a couple pieces of diamond plate on bedside and top to dress things up. I dont think I'll use screws or rivets, got some killer adhesive to make a clean look. The best thing is, I have a big pile of alum scrap and a table saw with a metal blade at work. FREEBIE!

Good Advice
100? I bet it will. I'm going to try and get it installed soon. Have a 11 month old baby so he gets first attention. What kind of fuel lines, (hard, soft , braided) did you use? I'm thinking a steel line until the bed and then some form of steel braided hose in the bed area so if it gets dinged by cargo or something it wont break. Any thoughts?

Box in bed
Got the box in with a little work. Had to mount it a off the bed to keep the lid from touching the back rail. Something to consider. Just because the box will fix in the hole dont mean the lid wont rub. It came out better this way, I wont have anything get stuck under the box and hold moisture against the bed and I can hose it out if dirt gets under it. Will try to get some picks, Moster69 send me an email address as I have not master the profile thingie and it keeps kicking me out.
