Question 351M-460 swap

okay, I have some problems...but heres the story first. I have a 1978 F-250 4x4 4 spd, the body is fair, 4x4 works great and it sits on a decent set of 17/40x16.5 gumbo mudders. I bought this truck for $850, and I'm kinda of wantin a sleeper (everyone around town knows the last 2 owners and says its junk). the 351 runs good, has a mild cam; holley 2 bbl; headers, BUT the oil ring in #7 cyl. now resides in the oil pan, or so i was told...the motor needs bored as a result and I cannot keep oil in it. and I want those 40's to turn over a little easier . ANYWAY, a while back I bought an old '79 F-150 4x4 which is coming in handy for the body (b/c holes are bad in adverse weather conditions) but it has a 460 dropped in it. It looks awfully small for a 460, but the valve covers clearly state it is a 460. so how do I know for sure it is a 460? also I am comparing it with a 460 interceptor I saw laying in a barn, it looked way bigger than this motor, I am also wondering how to verify that this motor is an interceptor b/c it is for sale for $275, and my 460 would really scream then. any help is greatly appreciated, sorry for the trucks life memoir...oh, and besides a fly wheel and clutch, what else will i need to complete this swap? I am a little bit tight on $$$, so try to be easy on the ol' wallet...thanks again

I have done this swap. I used advanced adaptors motor mounts and a weber flywheel.I think an outfit called L&L now has kits. The exhaust manifolds hit the frame, also.

alrighty (thanks by the way), the F-150 that currently houses my 460 has no clearance problems, it originally came w/ a 351M also...but which side(s) do the manifolds rub on? and might a set of 460 valve covers fit a 460? (seems dumb, but u never kno around here) like i said...the valve covers say 7.5L 460 cid...but it looks small, and did ford ever produce any other v-8 that came factory w/ a 4 bbl?

No. They won't.

Since you have 2 working trucks, the swap is easy. Replace the 351M with the 460 and take everything you need from the 460 truck. That would be motor mount perches, etc. The transmission bolt patterns are the same so no grief there. There might be flywheel differences so just use the stuff from the 460 truck.

L@L has every thing you need to do the swap.I tried to put the same setup together with factory parts but it wont work with the factory 4 speed.I asume you have the factory new process435 tranny.best bet is a C6 also asuming you have a maried transfer case.I have a police intercepter in my 77 150 the only differance i could see is the oil cooler.

okay folks, heres the scoop, the 79 f-150 came w/ a 351M and has a 460 in it, it is mated to a junk C-6 mated to a NP205.

my 78 f-250 also came w/ a 351M mated to a 4spd w/ a NP t-case (prolly also a 205)which it retains, however the 351 is very far gone and i need to condense my junk. i have found a 66' 429 CJ flywheel for $70 and i'm planning on buyin a whole new clutch kit for the 460 just to be safe. im very tight on $$$, so i cant afford a $1200 kit to do it all. as dumb/crazy as it sounds i am wantin this truck for college b/c they have an off road club, and if nothin else for somethin to do in my free time. anyway, thats the story...

and how easily does an interceptor fit in the engine bay of a truck? the way i understand it, the interceptor is a car motor that will not just simply drop right in...

the 460 should bolt right in.The blocks are all same. The only problem with car moters is the oil sump is in the front right about where your axle is.Cheap fix is go to autostone and get a oil pan and pickup for a van with 460.
