cleveland and tranny stupidity
i have a 3 speed fmx in my 67fastback and i want some kind of 4 or five speed. toploaders seem to be the tranny of choice but i dont know why. what is the difference??? also, is there any specific truck i could get an old tranny out of that would bolt up to my 351C? i dont want a truck tranny that first gear is a crawler, unless its a five speed where i can start in second when i want to... i also want something that has an overdrive in it, perhaps a four speed with overdrive or three speed with overdrive. any information on where to get a tranny for my car would be appreciated. i live in washington, so if there are any people that know of a closeby place to get one, please let me know. thanks

..and the 300/240 big six, 250 little 6, 3.8 rwd 4.5 svo
how many did i miss?
as far as a manual the ZF 5 speed is the only way to go even tho a junk yard toploader would be cheaper the ZF will give you a low(there are different gearings) AND A OVERDRIVE omg
to the junkyard you go
heya eric what pattern does the modulars use?

more questions about those trannies
still im pretty stupid... i dont know what a ZF 5 speed is. any idea what gear ratios they would be? mostly applying that question to first and overdrive gears. also i thought it would be good to tell you guys that my 351C has close to 425 horse... so i also wonder if these trannies we're talking about can handle this. i would think so but its better to be reassured...thanks

C4 will fit as well. But it would need to be beefed up a bit which I heard can be done. These are preferred in most cases because they do not suck as much horsepower as a C6 does. I have a 302 with a C6 in my 83 Ranger and that transmission is slowing it down big time. I thought I saw the guys on horsepower TV do a 5 speed swap on a 66 or so Mustang quite a while ago. I think they used a TKO T5 but am not for sure.

the only reason i didnt want to go with the t5 was because i heard it didnt bolt up right. i dont want to make this whole project a pain because of my limited knowledge (cough cough) but i also wonder if the toploader can withstand the stuff i want to throw at it??? and whats the AOD, and where could i get one...as in what type of vehicle was it in or something like that? thanks for the info...

The AOD is an automatic, and from what I understand you want a manual. I would think that the toploader 4 speed would be able to take much more abuse that a T5. I don't see any issues as far as the T5 bolting up to the Cleveland. It has the same pattern as a 302 so it should work. You might be able to get a T5 TKO to handle the power of that cleveland. I guess what it all comes down to is how much you are willing to spend.

i do want a manual. from what i understand the tko is pretty spendy. id rather have a toploader 4 speed. i am dutch...very very dutch, but practical. where would i be able to get a toploader 4 speed? what specific vehicles had them? and would i be able to find one at a junkyard? would it have to be rebuilt? how much will it cost? thanks for the info...again

The toploader 4 speed was pretty much found in cars through out the 60's and 70's. I do not know the specific years but your 67 was probably available with one when it was new. I do know they were found in more high performance cars like Boss 302's, Mach 1's, Cougar Eliminator's, and so on. Toploaders may be a little hard to come by in a junk yard but you could always get lucky on that. I have seen a few on ebay from time to time though. As far as rebuilding one. It may be best to inspect the inside and see how it looks. At minimum, a new set of bearings and some new seals should suffice.
