-10mpg 04 Screw Lariat 4x4 5.4
I have a '04 Supercrew Lariat 4x4 with a 5.4 (2,700 miles) and im getting just under 300 miles a tank (30 gallon tank). Not only that, the gauge and computer thing in the dash arent correct. I was driving the truck last week and the computer said I had 0 miles left and I had only driven 245 miles on the tank. So I filled up a gas can, bungy corded it in the back and drove it until she ran out of gas at 289 miles! I've taken the truck to ford 4 times now and first they told me the truck needed to break in, then they supposedly did a mileage test with a computer and said it came back with 13 miles to the gallon. I told them they're results were wrong because im doing the math and I know what its getting. If I cant get this resolved, I might be looking at lemon law. I love the truck other than the mileage, but 8-9 miles to the gallon is unacceptable. I have 2 friends with the same truck. One is a supercrew xlt 2x2 5.4 and the other is a fx4 4X4 with 5.4 and both dont even get a low fuel light until 380 miles which means probably 430 miles to the tank. I could only wish

I think you have to go to through the DSB before the lemon law procedure. 8-9 mpg is ridiculous, even that gas guzzling Dodge does better than that. If that mpg test they did was computerized then I say its crap, I know you said that the math (best way to figure it) says 8-9 but since you have the lariat, what does your message center tell you for mpg? Call the dealer and say that you want this resolved or you go to the DSB, if you had it in four times for this then I think you have ample evidence.

The message center stays 11.1 pretty much all of the time. I dont trust it at all though. Last week I let it go to zero and still drove another 45 more miles. When I fill up it says i have around 350 miles left, but I never really get over 300. Whats the DSB? and how do I start the lemon law process without having to get an attorney? Do they give me a new truck or how does that work? I didnt put any money down on it, but I have made 2 car payments. Thanks for everybodys input.

I hear you robinwood and I agree that your figures are low but you need to put a few more miles on it. Ford fees that a motor under 10,000 miles is still not broken in.
I don't understand the big tado over mileage. It is what it is a truck that is first made to "work" and second made to get the groceries! When I go and hookup my cargo trailer I don't even think about mileage, I want power and safety first hauling 8600 lbs first. I played that annoying game of watching the mileage and driving in a way to get the most. I realized that I wasn't driving like a liked to and enjoying the truck less....It is a nice truck but that what it is...You want gas mileage buy a rice maker.

5.4L SuperCrew 4x4 with 850 miles. 50/50 highway city. Towing 1100 lb. Jetski on the weekends. 11.6 mpg. Fuel computer and hand calculation match closely. I have a 30 gallon tank. The howl the intake makes at 2500 rpm is worth the price of lower mileage.
FYI be careful running the tank dry. Everybody I've talked to has lost their fuel pump within weeks of running out of gas. It burns up when it runs dry.
If you're getting 8-9 mpg, and there are no trouble codes, you may have a vacuum leak. If that's the case, the computer is richening the fuel mixture to compensate for the excess oxygen in the intake. Dealer needs to hook up to the computer and check the fuel trim to see if it's in range. On my old clunker, I'd check for vacuum leaks by spraying starting fluid around the hoses. If the idle speed changed, there was my vacuum leak. Wouldn't recommend it on these new vehicles.
Good luck.

I have same truck/ 30 gal tank 12,000mi. at 2700 I was recording around 14mpg. 24 gal. of 89 took me 354mi. Fuel mileage didn't level off untill after 2nd oil change at 6000 mi. My local travel yelds average mileage around 14.5- 15mpg, with my last non-tow trip producing 18mpg (319mi-17.7gal). I reset my mpg display with every fill-up and it is usually within .5mpg of my accual caluculations. Variations only come when the tanks end usage is dramatically different than the first portion.
