2000 F-150 rear ABS sensor replacemet

Anyone know how to replace the rear ABS sensor. I took my truck into the local Ford dealership and they stated that the sensor needed to be replaced to terminate the ABS light being on all the time. I decided not to have them replace it b/c they were going to charge me over $1000 to replace the door actuators! I ordered the parts and replaced the actuators in about 30 minutes....
Anyway, can anyone tell me where the rear sensor is and give a brief explanation of how to replace it?

Thanks, jaybyrd

I changed mine in my 2000 2WD F150. My ABS light came on and stayed on.

It is located on the top/front of the rear differential.
It has one bolt and one electrical connector if I remember correctly.
About $20-25 for the new one and 10 minutes to change it.

Check with dealer for this part. I think it was about 22 bucks when I replaced mine. You would be surprised at how competitive dealer prices are. Not only that but you are getting oem parts. If something seems a little high just ask them if thats the best they can do. 9 times out of 10 you will get a lower price. Hope this helps

The sensor on top of the rear diff is called the speed sensor. This is the one you want to replace. According to the dealer it is fairly common for this sensor to fail.

I got mine at a dealership as well. I always get them to knock about 20% off. They quote me a price and I'll ask if that is list price and what he can actually sell it for. They will charge you list if you don't ask, IMO. Good luck jaybryd. I'm pretty sure you will need to unplug your battery for awhile, while you change the sensor, to get the the light to go off and stay off. One of these more knowledgable guys on here can confirm that for you. I'm no mechanic either. I have just enough tools to be dangerous.

If you can't get the light off, try auto zone, they usually hook OBDII up and run your codes and cancel the error for free, if you find a "stickler for detail person" and won't turn it off unless they know its fixed, you have your receipts right...Usually they are pretty nice folk. After a few false lites (ford is good for that) I bought my own OBDII reader. You may try Advance also, if they are closer, I know here about 7 months back they were trying to get the same free service going.

I live in Hawaii, nothing is free.
The Ford place here was going to charge me about $95 to replace it!!
Thanks for the info. I will check with Autozone...Napa...to see what's up.
(Never go to Cutter Ford if in Hawaii!)
