Question How do I register an out-of-province vehicle without ownership

My dad bought a 51 F1 last year but we don't have an ownership for it. How can we register it in Ontario? Do we need to find an ownership & VIN tags from another truck to register it? Or is there another way to do it?

Thanks for any help.

I would suggest doing a title search with CAA before you do anything.

Go to a local Justice of the Peace and swear out an affidavit.
You should have the correct VIN from the truck, and a bill of sale if possible. The previous owners name & address would be good too.
I bought a 66 Galaxie back in 88 that the owner brought down from Winnipeg. The ownership, bill of sale, and all the bills for the rebuilt 429 PI were in a plastic shopping bag. Well, didn't the wife throw the bag out!
I explained the whole thing to the J.P., and he signed the affidavit & sent me on my way. I think it cost $40?

Talking Affidavits

Al's right ...of course!....it worked!

You can "swear out an affidavit", in front of any Notary Public, Barrister & Solicter or Lawyer. Lucky for me, my neighbour is a layer at a community legal clinic

I did not have the proper VIN, ownership etc., etc.. as I have assembled my truck from swap meet parts, atarting with the cab from Dave in lilton and a rolling chasis from Cec in Alliston.

I bought a 1953 M100 VIN from a budy in my club ans built a story around that. I drafted it up on the computer in what i thought was correct format. Had the neighbour look at it, she made some corrections and format suggestions and signed and notarized it. (Signed this____ of _____, 2004 in Toronto or whatever is true for you and then stamps it with her embosing seal.)

Here's a goofy example I made up for a buddy in my club (SOCP).

AFFIDAVIT

1. I am Glen Mead of no fixed address, a resident of Port Credit and a Canadian Citizen.
2. I swear all the information stated here is the truth.
3. In the fall of 1988 I bought a derelict 1953 Mercury M100, VIN ……… from Old Crabby, a farmer on the 4th concession of who knows where. Because the truck had laid idle for 17 years the original ownership and papers could not been found …. The truck was on the land when Old Crabby bought the farm from aunt Lousise, (get creative have fun it’s fiction!!!)
4. I dragged the thing home and caught Malaria and the project lay idle fo rsseveral years. This past ….. I resurrected the project with a completion date expected of May 12th 2003, so I can drive in the SuperCruise to Pigeon Forge and win a lot of hardware!!!!
5. the vehicle is a 1953 Mercury M100 with purple polka dots on a pink striped back ground , a weasel in a hampster cage fed by cow dung powers the damn thing.

Thanks for the advice guys. Here's a twist, we bought the truck from someone down the road from my house who brought the truck up from Kansas, so we have no idea about who the original owner was. Do you think the affidavit will still work? Would we then take the affidavit to the MTO office?

At least the seller is still trying to help us find an ownership for it...

Absolutely
This is very common place for old vehicles, cars or trucks.

There is a difference between building a car/truck & it from scratch then registering it than there is about regsitering an un-touched previously owned vehicle.

What are the differences? Are the differences the same for all 13 Canadian juristitions?

The put together vehicle (Like a Hot Rod) can receive a VIN# of your creation.

Yet a truck that has been registered for many years can be transferred easily.

...and that's why my buddy goes to old wreckin' yards witha screw driver and removes the VIN tags from derelict Mercurys and sells 'em.
Actually Milion, you and Dueller are in good parts of the country for that!

If you've got time for a drive in the country and stubble upon, (that's what you tell the wife ) an old wreckin' yard, just have your screw driver ready and only take from the ones that aare completely toasted or already scavenged severely....in which case the VIN is probably already gone...oh well!

I hear where you're coming from ...but... IMHO - I'd rather see those VIN's in the hads of people like us who really care about this old Canadian Iron and will make it available to die-hard lovers and restores of the old iron than recylced as part of some new fangled disposable consumer product.

VIN numbers

Removing vin numbers is similar to using plates off another vehicle except it is a criminal offence.

Oh!, then let's not do that or even council anyone to do that!
