Can I swap an AOD out for a C6.....?

I have an '89 Bronco with 302, AOD and push-button operated transfer case. I know there are C6's that'll bolt up to the 302, but I don't know about the transfer case.

Is there a C6 that'll bolt in without having to modify anything? If so, what model(s)/year(s) would be the source?

Or would it require a different transfer case?

Yes any C6 found behind a 300 I6 302 or 351W will work. you'll need the C6 flywheel for a 302. your Tcase will bolt to it. You'll need the C6 kickdown for a EFI found in EFI F250/350's. Might need shorter/longer driveshafts but not sure on that

Thanks, Txquadhunter24. Anybody got yhe length of the C6 and AOD? If it takes a driveshaft swap, I'll stick with the AOD. ~

Question Why would you swap AOD to C-6?

I wonder why you would change and AOD and put in a C-6. I was actually going to do the swap the other way around. Is C-6 better (so I've heard) than AOD?, what about fuel economy. I currently have a stock C-6 in a 300 I-6 2WD Bronco.

you don't need a c6 pressureplate or flywheel.i used one that came off of my old aod'd truck on a c6 302 and it worked just fine.

The C6 can take more than an AOD or E40D trans can. Now this is in stock form. Most trannys can be built to handle just about anything but that takes money. So jst stock for stock the C6 gets my vote as the work horse.

Fuel mileage doesn't concern me, but I still need the case length for the AOD tranny to find out if I need to change the driveshafts on my '89 Bronco.

The C6 in my '79 Bronco is a real workhorse. Overdrive on the AOD is a nusiance. When I need to go on the interstate, I drive my wife's '95 Sable SW.

you won't need to swap the drive shafts. The C6 is 1/4-1/2" shorter, that's all.

Also the BW1356 does mount to a C6 (UGh, I hate that pos tcase in mine) So you should have no worries. Drop it in, and go wheelin'

*edit* The C6 from your 79 won't match up to your 302, so you'll have to find another one....

If you're yilling to drive to AZ...............I've got one.

Question But then larger tires for highway?

Well, I use my Bronco for everyday use even on the highway from time to time. Don't have a backup car. Do larger tires replace in some way the need of an overdrive tranny for highway fuel economy? if so then keeping the C-6 would be worth keeping...

The larger tires only help to a point. If stopping and going is something you do then it will hurt you because you will no longer have the get up and go but on the highway it will bring the rpm's down. Most claim the too large of a tire will hurt because it takes more to turn it.

If I found an AOD that was a sgood as my C6 I would swap. I only drive my centurion around town and on road trips. No hauling either so an OD would be helpful to me.

Okay, if I read things right, a C6 for a late model 351W should bolt right up to the 302 without any other mods to the transfer case, driveshafts or anything else (except the shift quadrant and I can live with that). If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Otherwise, the next task for the '89 Bronco after I get it back from the shop is the transmission.

Something to consider when swapping out from the AOD....

C6 internal frictional losses? 67 hp and up....
AOD...40hp....
Loss of ovedrive...up to 3-4 mpg, plus 1-3 for the extra frictional drag when using the C6...
The small block C6's were barely any stronger than a 4x4 AOD....and it does not take much to beef up an AOD.

C6's for 4x4's are made in 2 different tail shaft lengths. You will probably need the short one.

Were the different lengths related to big block and small block trans or did the small block come with two differet lengths?
