Rough Running 86 F250
Please Help Me,
My truck is progressively running rougher and smokeing. It has lost a lot of power and it wouldn't go faster than 45 mph on my way home last night. The smoke smells like it isn't buring the fuel completely. It seems like it is running on 6 or 7 cylinders. I replaced the air filter. The oil level is ok. I could't find any loose vacuum lines.
It also doesn't want to shift into higher gears. The transmission fluid level is ok. I didn't see oil in the water or water in the oil.
I'm new to diesels and have a Chiltons, but it is not helpful in the troubleshooting catagory.
Where do I start?
Thaks for you advice.

I would start with the fuel system. You can check the injectors by cracking the line loose on top of the injector while it's running if no change is noticed then you are missing on that cyl. if a drop in rpm's is noticed then that cyl is working correctly. Also look for fuel leaks in the system before you start cracking lines loose, it maybe nothing more that just having to replace some orings on the injector return caps, or tighten a fuel supply line to a couple of injectors.
