Welding Gas

I have a Snap-on 110v mig I've had for about 10 years now and was wondering what everyone uses for gas. I started out with Argon/CO2 but then switched to straight CO2 after a friend that builds Street Rods told me that's what he uses. Saved some money on each fill up but I'm wondering if the weld quality is really that much different between the two. With the CO2, my welds seem to not penetrate as much, of course that could just be the age of the machine too. What do you guys think?

Straight CO2 will give you the best penetration, but a 75/25% mix or Argon/CO2 will provide the best results. Part of the problem with 100% CO2 is it produces LOTS of spatter. To compensate, you will have to turn up the heat. The mix will give less spatter and IMO a better looking weld, as well as better weld puddle control.

I have noticed more spatter with the CO2. I just don't really use it enough to worry about switching. Do you think they would take my CO2 bottle in on trade towards the Argon mix?

I only use argon/co2. I would rather spend a few extra bucks on the gas and have good looking welds I don't have to grind. I can see where with the small machine penatration would be a concern. Bevel the joint to be filled and it shouln't be a probem.

I use argon75%with carbon dioxide 25% unimix on my 110v miller gs420 welder it works great . As for trading your bottle out the weld shop in my town they said that i could trade mine for one with a different gas ( I was wanting to try some aluminum welding but i have not tryed it with my welder yet) They said i could trade back when
i needed to
