Question 5.9L Cummins Diesel in a '78 F-250 ? ? ?

Hello -

I don't know if this is appropriate to post this topic in this area!

I am in the process of restoring a '78 F-250 4x4 Chassis and dropping a '72 F-Series body on the '78 Frame. I was planning on converting over to a 460 EFI setup - BUT; I have recently come across an '02 Dodge 2500 Ram (totalled out and rolled but the powertain is excellent and has on 45K miles) with a 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel with the NV5600 6-Speed manual. So I am BRAIN STORMING on converting the Cummins to my Ford.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this type of conversion to encourage or scare me away from this. Thanks Folks!

Cummins conversion

I have a 1978 Ford F-250 4x4, which I am in the process of doing a diesel conversion. Out came the 400 and auto tranny. Soon, I will be installing a 1997 Cummins 6BTA5.9 out of a Dodge and a 1998 NV4500 transmission out of a Dodge, which will be adapted to my NP205 Ford transfer case. One problem I ran across so far is somebody notched the frame on this truck so the exhaust manifold on the right side would clear. Now there is a crack approx. 3/4" long coming down from the notch. I will attempt to patch this before I finish. Also, this truck currently has a Dana 44 front axle. I am in hopes that this will be sufficient. I would rather have a Dana 60 in the front, and a Dana 80 in the rear, especially if I get a wild hair and decide to pull this truck this summer.

If you are interested in doing a conversion, a few sources you may want to check out are:

http://www.fordcummins.com
They specialize in installing Cummins engines in pickups.

Another place I ran across while surfing is a place called Autoworld Hi/lo truck shop. The phone number is 406 727 8915. The owner's name is Kenny Kraus. I personally have not dealt with this place yet, being that I have just ran across this information while surfing, but I may give him a call in a few days.

Another place to check with is Reliable Diesel in AZ. There is a guy there by the name of Randy. He has done numerous conversions, and can probably do these blindfolded. The phone number there is 480-325-6262.

Thanks for the information!

What is the best course of action about the fuel tanks. Do I use the tanks I have and try to find and external Diesel Fuel pump, or try to retrofit the Dodge tanks (with the internal pumps) into my Ford Frame?

What kind of clearance problems am I going to run into between the firewall and the radiator core support?

Do I need to upgrade the rear axle, and try to find something heavier then my Dana 60?

Do I jeri-rig a mechanical clutch setup, or try to convert to hydraullic clutch linkage?

Thanks folks!

the nice part is you have all the parts you need to do do this(hopefully cheap) although you are going to have to do some fabracting to pull this one off. I believe it is very do able. if the frame and suspension is still good on the dodge I'd want to switch the bodies more than deal with all the wiring for the motor and drivetrain problems. just an Idea I never heard of anyone doing this with that new of a cummins.remeber to post pictures of your progress. good luck!

Wow, this is an old post. Sorry to say I never did this swap. Haven't given up on the idea though. I am wanting to swap a 12-Valve Cummins into my '96. Just looking for the right $$$ deal to come a long. Unfortunatley, I sold my '78 to my father in-law. It went to a good home though!
