'91 F700 429 worth a try

Is a 1991 "late model" heavy duty F700 truck engine the same ol' 429 engine that we've grown to love? I'm looking at a 25,000 lb bucket truck and can get a "better deal " on one with a gas 429 engine than I can with a deisel. I'm guessing 4-5 miles/gallon is acceptable. Could it be fuel injected? Are these engines any beefier due to the heavy duty application? I won't win any races.

Has no one here ever had any experiance with these truck engines? Hard to imagine that some of you factory mechanics haven't been exposed to the heavy duty series on occasion to give at least an opinion? Thank you.

They never had 429s in the 90's. Any way the 429 would be ill suted for this anyway due to its short stroke. The 460 was the only big block used in that time period. It should be plenty beefy and should pull just fine with proper gears. There should be no real changes from the regular 460 they were plenty stout already.

jj292, ford offered the 429, not 460 in medium duty trucks through either 97 or 99. it is an industrial engine and it is physically identical. offered in 2v and 4v versions and later f.i. not high performance, but very torquey

A 91 may be an EFI 7.0, in industrial trim, they're no big revver, lots of torque though. And, gas mileage probably won't be pretty.
