F-350 Emergency Brakes

1999 F-350 Super Duty 4x4 power stroke.

Just got a call from my dealer informing me that they have to replace both my rear brake pads and the entire emergency brake system. The pads were low from normal wear but the emergency brakes were evidently ruined from running the truck with the emergency brake on. My question is this: Are there two separate braking systems on a F-350? I thought the emergency brakes were part of the regular drum brakes in the rear.

Thank You

You have rear disc brakes on the Superduty. The emergency brake is actually a small drum brake on the inside hub of the disc.

Our trucks have 4 wheel discs. The (rear) e-brake is like a little drum setup. The rear rotors have a deeper hub section because it's really a small drum for the e-brake. If you took off the rotor you'd see an equally small set of shoes in there behind the hub. I say small compared to the truck there on, but our e-brakes are bigger that most cars rear brakes all together

It's pretty cool tho, i noticed it when i upgraded my brakes a couple months ago. I amagine they setup the e-brakes up like that because drum brakes hold much better in the rear, especially as an e-brake.

Hope that helps...

No kidding, I never relized the e-brake was set up like that! If I drive with the e-brake on even 1 "click" there is a warning chime that goes off. Pretty neat thing that Ford added. IMO.

I guess the 1999 model that I have did not come with an e-brake indicator light. Oh well, I will just check that it's off from now on.

Thanks

I think half if not all of our E450's have the Ebrake on the driveshaft.

I would question what they are telling you.

wolfmanagh,

Not sure about the E450s but i'm sure they compare to the F450s. That said, given the gvw or how much more the 450s can tow/carry i'm pretty sure they have large drum brakes in the rear. I mean the rear ends on those things are like the size of a rockwell. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the e-brakes on those trucks are on the driveshaft, 20% better braking there. The F250 -F350 Superduty have 4 wheel discs and have the internal mini-drum e-brakes as i explained above. If you still don't believe me take a rear tire off of that fine F250 you have there and take a look at the brakes...
