That motor should last a long time if maintained properly. I've got 130k on mine and still strong. Biggest problem seems to be dual tank problems involving fuel pumps and check valves that go bad. Ford had a recall at one time but only gave a 1 year warrantee on repair. Lots of threads on this subject. Good luck with it! Don't look to get much more than 12 - 14 mpg. Gary

Matt, 12-14 is about the norm for milage. 300 six is a very good engine. Keep it serviced and it will last a long time.

92 F150?????

Hey everybody,I have a 93 F-150,2wd,4.9L,5 speed. On a trip I took a few years ago to Key West FL. I had a motorcycle and a 4-wheeler in the bed,and had the tailgate down.On the interstate I stayed at 70mph and to my suprise I got 22mpg!!!On the way home I got 20mpg!I had installed a K&N air filter other then that the truck was stock.I have now installed an MSD 6A box,Accel super coil,8mm plug wires, and have taken the engine driven fan off and replaced it with a Flex-a-lite electric fan.The fan made the most noticable diffrence.I now get around 17-19mpg on the highway and around 13-15mpg in the city.

Can't beat an I6, especially Ford's 300/4.9L. You may also want to check out the I6 engine forum. Lots of good info there too.

I have a 302, but have heard nothing but good things from people I know that have the I-6. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a truck with one in it.

My '93 F250 with a six and Mazda 5 speed gets 17.2 with the tailgate down and a fresh tune up.
