I JUST PUT A DEPOSIT ON A 92 F150 LONG BED XLT 2WD. I AM WONDERING A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE TRUCK.IT IS A 4.9L STR 6 AND WANT TO KNOW HOW RELIABLE THE ENGINE IS IT HAS 78000MILES ON IT.AND WHAT KIND OF MPG SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR.OH YEA ITS A 5 SPEED.ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
That motor should last a long time if maintained properly. I've got 130k on mine and still strong. Biggest problem seems to be dual tank problems involving fuel pumps and check valves that go bad. Ford had a recall at one time but only gave a 1 year warrantee on repair. Lots of threads on this subject. Good luck with it! Don't look to get much more than 12 - 14 mpg. Gary
Hey everybody,I have a 93 F-150,2wd,4.9L,5 speed. On a trip I took a few years ago to Key West FL. I had a motorcycle and a 4-wheeler in the bed,and had the tailgate down.On the interstate I stayed at 70mph and to my suprise I got 22mpg!!!On the way home I got 20mpg!I had installed a K&N air filter other then that the truck was stock.I have now installed an MSD 6A box,Accel super coil,8mm plug wires, and have taken the engine driven fan off and replaced it with a Flex-a-lite electric fan.The fan made the most noticable diffrence.I now get around 17-19mpg on the highway and around 13-15mpg in the city.
