I am going to start on a new project and want to build myself an engine.

The problem is that I live in an appartment building and will be doing all the assembly on the deck. I will need to wheel the engine into the elevator and bring it up 4 floors.

The elevator says that the max capicity is 1200 LBS but it is also older so I dont want to stress it out too much.

How much does a 351 weigh? I am sure it is not 1200 LBS but I just want to know what the weight is before I start.

Ah that brings back the good old days! Laying on my back in the snow and a puddle of gear oil while changing out a set of gears.

 

I think I'd worry about the floor in the apartment more than the elevator! Not sure about apartments, but residential design calls for 40lbs per sq ft live load. A sheet of 3/4 ply might not be a bad idea to spread that load around on the floor under the engine stand.
