Quench With Open Chambers

One of the threads mentioned quench on the 400 being impossible with open chamber heads. Would domed pistons from a 351C work, if you milled the high side of the dome off? That is of course dependent on the piston design allowing the dome to be milled off. I haven't seen one of these pistons up close, so I was wondering if the piston dome matches the chamber shape close enough to create a sort of quench on the chamber side opposite of the spark plug.

One other question is, how many cc's piston dish would it take to make 9.0-1 compression with a closed chamber head. Assuming zero deck height and standard .040 head gasket.

Thanks for any help.

There is no area inside the dome of an open chamber to get a quench effect.

It would take 95cc in addition to the gasket to make 9:1 CR. If the closed chamber head is 60cc, then a 35cc dish is needed.

The only way I can think of to get quench out of an open chamber head would be to cut into the head about .200" (guess) deep with a boring tool about 4.080" diameter. Run a compression height that puts the piston .160" above the block surface and have a huge reverse dome measuring what, 40cc maybe. I don't know, just some of my random thoughts.

the KB site is down but flatlander lists some KB's. call the tech line to verify that the piston is acceptable for your application. not so huge cams will be OK with W type piston tops, but there are dished C style valve releif pistons in the KB catalog(with pics)
