My DEF Fuel Contamination Goof.

I finally received my truck back from the dealer where I had it towed to after I accidentally put 2/10's of a gallon of DEF into my fuel tank almost 5 weeks ago. The biggest holdup on repairing the truck was waiting on the in tank fuel sensor and pump which was on emergency order from the vendor who makes the unit for Ford.

Below is the invoice from the dealer.

OUCH! did your insurance pay it?
Thanks for the share. I will be VERY CAREFUL to not do this.

Did you start the truck after pouring the DEF in the main tank? If not, I would think just draining the tank would do the trick.

DEF is heavier than diesel fuel, so it goes right to the bottom of the tank......then when the key is turned "ON", the fuel pump kicks in, circulating the DEF thru the system!!! Even when not started.

WOW, talk about an expensive mistake! It makes one realize that all an enemy needs to do to wreck your world is to dump a Coke into your fuel tank.

I still can't see how people can mix the two around. The DEF nozzle and fill port are half the size of the diesel side.

Cell phones, distractions, "Knowing" what they are doing (with out reading any info)......I want NO help when fueling, adding DEF, hooking trailers, etc. I have my steps to go through, and don't want to be interrupted!!!! And there are those that just have their head parked in a dark place!!!!!!!

A $12,000 brain fart is a pretty big dark place For as many times throughout the course of a one year that we may put DEF in compared to fuel I just don't see how you can get them mixed up one has a green cap The other has a really really tiny blue cap. I hope your insurance company helps you out with this but I just don't see them paying for your mistake

WOW, for $13 large, maybe you could have just driven it and prayed for the best, surely it could not have cost much more to repair and who knows, you might have got away with it?????

Accidents happen. My guess is that same mistake doesn't happen to the OP again.

This is partially the governments fault, all these rules and regulations we have to keep up with and burning the candle at both ends to sustain our selves while being taxed over and over again. Ill stop my rant now. Hope the insurance company steps up.

That doesn't sound right.

If it wasn't started, the fuel system is already full of fuel...the pump pressurizes the fuel that is in the system. It doesn't circulate new fuel from the tank and expel what was in the fuel lines back to the tank. Unless the system was full of air, there would still be diesel already in the fuel lines.

So, if not started, how would the DEF circulate through the system? Are you saying the fuel system bleeds dry every time the truck turns off and then it sucks up new fuel from the tank and refills the fuel lines?

Problem is He started it, even for a short time it contaminated the fuel system. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...d-nominee.html And I dont think the fuel system is a fully closed system, I believe there is a pressure regulator that anything that is over set pressure goes back to the tank, so it will circulate some fuel.

In regard to insurance provider, I personally could not ask them to cover the cost of my mistake. There are accidents and mistakes, I interpret a difference and would accept the burden even knowing the cost. I do not wish to create a debate over insurance, I am genuinely curious if others share my thoughts.
