2006 6.0 power stroke longevity
Hello brand new to the forms but have Ben watching this site for a while now bit anyway looking at an 06 f250 with 280 thowsand miles on it it's a 6.0 Diesel the dealer has no service records going to go take a look this weekend it's a great price but I've herd slot of horror storys about the 6.0 but have seen some 6.0s really kick some *** can I expect at least another hundred thousand miles out of it or just assume it's going to break buy 300

It depends. Pop the hood, look at the passenger side cylinder head, just above the exhaust manifold. If you see a stud and nut holding the head on, that's good. If you see a bolt, that's stock and potentially bad. Add-ons like a coolant filter can be a good thing, if the EGR valve is still there and plugged in the truck probably is not deleted and still a potential time bomb.

Also, purchase/borrow a monitor/scanner to take with you and plug it into the obd2 plug so you can read the engine vitals and also see if it is throwing any codes. A lot of good info on this forum (and the tech folders) such as what readings to look for along with the various types of monitors/scanners. They can save you a lot of bucks by knowing ahead of time what issues you may be facing before buying. For instance, oil coolers ain't especially cheap and a good test drive with gauges checking delta of EOT and ECT may indicate that there will be one coming up in your future.

Your signature quote is ironic with that post-
I'd love to get my hands on a nice 05-07 F350 SRW crew cab with one of these horrible terrible 6.0s. I suppose that as long as people are willing to badmouth a design that has been updated and built around, I can hold onto my dream of an affordable Superduty for a family vehicle.

Run6.0Run has over 800K miles on his, Coolfeet has over 800K miles on his, Piolet had over 350K miles on his. And these are just the FTE handles I could think of in a hurry, there are oh so many more.
They are beast, 05-07 only REAL issue was the STC fitting. I kept putting it off to replace, and paid the price. All done now though.
Keep up on the fluid changes, filters (OEM), and the charging system, along with a live data scanner. You should be good. Fix the bugs that the other previous owner(s) did not keep up on.
You would have a great truck. Only thing though, is if I am going to just start in on owning a truck with that many miles, is I had better be getting the deal of a life time.
I don't mind owning a truck and racking up the mileage really high, but I would want to buy a truck with lower mileage, and then rack up the mileage. If that makes any sense.
Plus, the 6.0L forum group is the best people around, and they all have the experience to help out with whatever may come along.
Good luck. - Preston

There is a line between making a statement and bashing. Browbeating another user with your opinion does not change people's minds. Present a proper, clear, and concise argument and let them make their own choices.
Follejag, the 6.0 is actually a decent engine if certain work is done to it. There are aftermarket parts that will bring it's reliability on par with the 7.3.

Sometimes I think that when people do not present any facts to their claims that it doesn't actually persuade a potential buyer either way, if the potential buyer is smart.
So as of now, I just try and ignore ignorance. Present facts of what I know, and leave it there.
