Help

hi! First time posting anything anywhere lol. Got a 92 350 7.3 idi. I gave it to my son for when he got his license and of course he tore it down and we've been redoing it. He, like I did , wants to turbo of course. He's a sixteen year old redneck lol. He traded his dirt bike for a turbo from a 94-98 power stroke. I've noticed all the piping and manifold adaptor work. Please tell me is it possible to make this turbo work? I noticed on the turbo what looks like the wastegate control is electric is that adaptable? I'm thinking we could do something cool and make that controllable from the cab if possible. I'm not reading anything good about doing and I realize the work involved but using what we have in this case is best if possible thanks for any and all info.

I didn't know 94-98 powerstrokes *had* anything special turbo wise. Pretty sure that the only thing you might have a control on is a wastegate, and you can just leave that wired shut - You won't make enough boost out of that turbo to matter.

You don't get into a VGT(what you are thinking about) until '03 with the 6.0(6.uh-oh) motor.

The piping is going to be a real pain, and honestly, I'd be looking for an IDI kit before trying to do all that - They can be found in the $500 ish range, but you might need to do a bunch of craigslisting.
car-part.com might get you some leads.
Also, local wrecking yards might net you something.

Help

its nothing special but the kid he traded thought it was for a 7.3 idi but I knew when I looked at it it wasn't so I ran the numbers and found out what it went on. We can sell it if need be and get the right one just weighing my options lol thanks I'm putting all this together

All he did was trade for a whole bunch of work to make it work. It will end up being cheaper to find on for an IDi. Start searchng the junkyards /craiglist. Please don't let hI'm set it up to roll coal , it does noth8ng but waste fuel and makes all of us look bad.

From what I've been told the compression ratios are different between the engines(?) so yeah it can be a big PITA to make it work.

If you are patient you can find on for an IDI. Plan on massaging the firewall for the turbo to fit

Who buys something expensive before making sure it works for you?

Wait for an IDI turbo to appear on CL or Ebay. For trucks, they are easy to find and cheap.

A 16 year old with a truck! Tell me you never did anything stupid as a teenager lol! Gotta cut him some slack boys, his Pa's only trying to help him out. I'll admit I'm kinda jealous. My first car was a 90 ranger with a bad 2.9L!

you can make it work, but it will be easier and cheaper to just get the proper turbo for the IDI.

Hopefully you make this a learning lesson for him. He may be able to sell the PS turbo and get something out of the deal. Hopefully he learned not to listen to his freinsurance that have Powerstrokes. Even though they are both 7.3 liters they are different engines.

I guess I was a weirdo when I was in high school. This was before the internet and popular forums like FTE... My friend and I would go to the local library to check out books on our upcoming auto repair. We would use the 10-cent photocopier to make copies of the pages we needed to do the repair.

The internet makes things so much easier nowadays. I guess I don't have a lot of sympathy when all it takes is a question to a forum like the IDI subsection asking "can I use a PSD turbo on an IDI" and get nearly instant feedback. I'll try to be easier on the noobs from now on.
