Steering column bearing replacement

Hey all,

Has anyone here ever replaced all the bearings in their steering column? The shaft is very loose on the bottom of mine (in the engine bay).

Fixed Tilt column, floor shift.

If NumberDummy should happen by, any pertinent part numbers would be appreciated.

I am technically posting in the wrong area, my truck is a 91 F350 Diesel Dually. I read that the columns interchange from 80-91 and all my searching in the 87-96 forum has shown results for the 92+ columns which are completely different.

Thanks!

You sure it doesn't have a tilt column (only the wheel tilts)? 1978/91 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline: Tilt wheel operated by pressing the T/S handle forward.

Well no I'm not sure now. I don't recall seeing a tilt lever but I'll go outside and double check.. It is a XLT Lariat... I've only had the truck for a few months and haven't driven it since the snow started... I'll get back to you!

Well I'll be.... I never would have tried pushing the turn signal lever. I'd have felt pretty stupid if I went to a junkyard to get a tilt column!

Thanks! Apparently it IS a tilt column. I'll update my post to reflect that!

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. You'd be amazed on how many people are unaware their vehicles have a tilt wheel...because of how it operates.

Besides 1978/91 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline, you also push the T/S handle forward on the following: 1965/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars, 1980 Granada/Monarch/Versailles.

A pal of mine bought a new 1969 Mustang Mach I, he still owns it today.

Several years ago, he was bemoaning the fact that it didn't have a tilt wheel. I eyeballed the gap below the T/S handle, reached in...pushed the handle forward and VIOLA!

There's no separate tilt wheel lever until 1992 F150/350, Bronco & Econoiine, 1980 Passenger Cars except Granada/Monarch/Versailles.

Much appreciated!

You wouldn't by chance happen to know if the entire column requires disassembly would you? It appears from the diagram that it might be possible to access the bearing from the bottom of the column without needing to remove the shaft...

Most of the column has to be disassembled, as there's no way to get at these parts from the bottom of it, as they are above the 3B676 lower steering shaft & coupler assy that connects to the 3524 upper steering shaft.

I suggest before you do anything, buy the parts first. I don't know if auto parts stores will have some or all of these parts.

I'll list the Ford part numbers, sources if they are obsolete....probably tomorrow.

Thank you so much. I noticed National Parts Depot lists them but their mobile site doesn't say which is what. I'll look in the book tonight.

As always you're a lifesaver!

See if Mac's Antique Auto Parts has the parts, they're a lot closer to you than NPD

Mac's is located in Lockport NY, NPD's closest location to NY is in Charlotte NC

I thought the lower bearing on my tilt column was totally shot. The steering shaft had lots of side to side play. When I took it apart, I found that the bearing was still good but it had somehow slid of of it's bore. I just pushed it back in and it was good to go.
