F 100 '55 need info on p/s conversion my box is original and worn out...want to convert to p/s but don't know which unit to use???? Any suggestions??
Thanks..
I recently installed the CPP Power Steering conversion from Mid Fifty and could not be happier with it based on the installation and limited driving that I have had the chance to do. I found the installation to be easy and everything fit well. I retained the stock steering column so I purchased the lower centering bearing and rag joint for that application along with the power steering kit and a PS pump from mid-fifty. It makes a remarkable difference and works extremely well.
Which p/s pump did you use? This trk has a y motor v8 in it? Did not know if coupler came or not either. This trk still has the OE steering col in it.
Thks...

Here is a list of part numbers I used from MidFifty. My truck has a 289 motor but stock steering column.
4615-B: Power Steering Pump And Reservoir, Saginaw, Keyway, Black
4513-KSA: Power Steering Pulley, Satin Aluminum 1 Groove , Keyway
4614-5356: Steering Box, Power, Whole Kit, 400 Series
4625: Column Delron Bushing & Sleeve, Lower Centering
JR730-75R: Rag Joint, 3/4" 30 Spline X 3/4" Round
4661-17: Column Floor Mount 1 3/4 Column
Thanks Alan, how much did you cut off the steering column? Any advice about fitting the rag joint to the column? Thanks for the part list, I'll need brackets for the Y motor and maybe a different pulley but its a good start for sure....

I don't have an exact measurement on how much we cut off the steering column. It was not much but did not record that amount. We mocked it up and figured out how much needed to be cut in order to keep the steering wheel at the same location as stock. As for fitting the rag joint to the column I ground down two sides that would correspond to the locations of the set screws on the rag joint flat enough the set screws would get some bite and then drilled an indent in them at the location the set screws would hit to make sure that when the set screws were tightened they should have plenty of holding power. Sorry I did not take pictures of that part of the process. I kind of forget to document things as well as I should when working on the truck.
I have a 292 Y motor so I have issues with pulleys. I only have one small v-belt on the crank that pulls the water pump and alternator and the large belt on the frt of the crank that turns the rad fan. I'm going to have to have another pulley on the crank or double pulley off the water pump to pull the p/s pump. Anyone been down this road on an Y block? Got the 400 kit from Mid-Fifties got to order the pump/bracket and pulleys, rag joint etc.....

What is the 292 from, a car or truck?
According to the truck parts catalog, the 292 F100/250, and some F350/700 harmonic balancer is composed of an inner damper and single sheave (groove) outer pulley.
If this is what your truck has, the outer pulley (B8TZ-6A312-D) for the fan is bolted to the balancer.
Ford also offered a double sheave outer pulley that bolted to the balancer.
In order to run a P/S belt, you could bolt on another single sheave pulley, or if you could find one, replace the single sheave w/a double sheave outer pulley.
Motor was in the truck when we brought it so don't know,,,Classic parts has a double grove pulley but looks like it would fit to the water pump but I don't know. Has single center hole and two additional smaller holes by the picture but I guess it could have additional hole...would think it should have 4...but it is bell shaped would think counter balance mount would be more flat????
I have been researching this the last couple days for my truck. I have a 223, and after searching thru some old posts I have decided to run my pump off of the alternator. They make a double V belt pulley for the 10SI alt I have installed. It will look something like this...

If you were originally planning on keeping your generator... I just bought one of the last two generator/power steering pump mounts for a 215/223 that I could find. Obsolete Ford Parts in Nashville, GA. Hopefully I'll find time to get
it installed soon. My intention is, even though p/s wasn't an option in '53, to try to be as 'period correct' as possible - 6 volt, Eaton pump, Bendix power assist.
