Unhappy Bypass neutral safety switch (88 F150)

1988 F150 Straight Six 4-speed Manual Transmission.

6 wires going to switch on back of clutch resivoir (grey with yellow stripe, purple with yellow stripe, green, green, darker red with green stripe, lighter red with green stripe)

Which ones do I cut & splice to bypass neutral safety switch?

Thank You,

Tim

You should have two red/light blue wires that you splice. Here's a diagram.

Talking Bypass neutral safety switch (88 F150)

The red-light blue wire is the power. Pigtailed that off to the grey and purple wires.

Thank You all for the help!

Bypass neutral safety switch (88 F150)

Where did you do the splice? In the cab under the dashboard or under the hood, or at the transmission? I appear to be having the same trouble with my '92 F250 S/C 4x4, 460v8 E4OD tranny... on our recient holiday I had trouble several times that I traced back to the auto tranny park position. I was able to get it to go each time by rocking the truck then returning to park, but I backed it into the driveway & unloaded the camper, now I cannot get it to start again. Any help would be appreciated.

Ken, have you tried starting it in neutral? Or holding the key in start and moving the shifter between reverse through neutral to drive?

Yes, I tried that, won't start in park or neutral. I did start it by leaving the key full on & then jumpering the solinoid.

What is the best solution to fix this, I would prefer to do it right!?

Normally the neutral safety switch doesn't fail in both Neutral and Park at the same time. In fact, Neutral barely gets used so if the contacts get bad on the Park side, it'll usually start in Neutral. The problem is probably in the wiring somewhere or in the ignition switch. Check the red w/light blue wire coming out of the ignition switch in the start position.

On my 1988 I spliced the wires in the cab right behind the clutch reservoir. I heard from someone that the setup is similar on the automatics. On my 1985 F250 automatic I spliced the two red wires on the frame running near the transmission.

If you can jump the motor at the starter solonoid with the key on and truck in park then your problem is likley either the neutral safety switch or the starter switch on the column.

Good Luck!

Tim
