Fuel filtration

"Rep jail" refers to the result of an FTE rule - you can't just heap repeated reps on the same user. Evidently sometime in the past, a few users were "stuffing the ballot box" by repping one another every time they turned around. So a new rule was established - you can't rep another user until you've repped 25 other users. Lots of different opinions about whether that's an excessive number, or just a bad idea, or just fine. But sometimes someone wants to recognize another user's post by "repping" them, but they haven't done the 25-person rotation. So another user will step in and rep the useful post for them.
That's what I did above; knotty liked Bob's post, but must have repped him recently, so wasn't able to rep him again. I agreed that Bob's post was useful, so I repped him. Clear as mud? It's about as elegant and straightforward as a Ford electrical system....

The factory fuel filter / water separator was supplied by Racor and is a good system. I believe the OEM filters are 7 micron.
Although the factory system is a good one, additional protection can be installed. The OEM mechanical fuel pump is a strong pump and can draw fuel through at least one additional filter. I've read posts on various forums from folks who've done it.
A few years ago I decided to add extra filtration to my '96 because it is a dedicated tow rig and I'm often filling up at stations far from home. There are horror stories out there about folks getting a load of bad fuel which can overwhelm fuel filters and cause a lot of damage and delay.
I've added two additional filters to my truck on the frame rail beneath the driver's seat. Because I added two filters, I also installed an electric pump at the new filters to assist the OEM pump. The two new filters are a 10 micron sediment / water filter which has a drain port on it, and a 3 micron filter for maximum protection against fine sediment. The pump I installed provides about six psi to assist fuel delivery through the filters to the engine.
Is all this necessary? No.
But it sure can help in that off chance that you get a tankful or two of badly contaminated fuel somewhere in the sticks. I carry additional filters, and they can be changed as easily as a screw-on oil filter.
