The EGR system is software driven hardware.
If you block the EGR off the software will detect it as a fault and set code and CEL lamp.
You can't defeat software with a mechanical block off.
What happens during it's normal operation is the ignition timing is advanced and fuel is cut back helping to improve fuel mileage a bit plus helping to clean up emissions out the exhaust..
It's your call if you want codes and CEL and or Emissions test failure, if you need that.
Otherwise the motor will still run.
If the EGR system is operating properly, deleting offers no improvement in performance.
