Help, my truck keeps shredding rag joints...

I've gone through two in 6 months.

Clearly something is wrong besides the coupler itself, no? I'm assuming I need to check column alignment and a number of other things.

Any tips/advice to help sort this out?

What are you replacing, the entire steel/rubber coupler or just its rubber piece?

Where the heck did you buy this crap?

No wonder the coupling is breaking apart (shredding)...this is NOT correct. No steering coupler prior to 1980 had a nylon or plastic section...it's supposed to be rubber.

Maybe it's just the perspective of the angle of the picture, but the flange at the end of the steering shaft looks like it is bent. Could that be the case? I can get you a picture of just the shaft showing the flange if you'd like. It does have some contour to it, so that might be all I'm seeing.

Those new rag joints are using a plastic/nylon insert. Dennis Carpenter, et al.

Easier than a phone number... I just copied and pasted that part number into Amazon. Is this the correct coupler I should be using instead?

That looks better to me from the picture. I called Green Sales about one quite some time ago and even then they were selling only the reproductions made by Dennis Carpenter.

It definitely looks more robust. We'll see when it gets here... unfortunately it wasn't available for Amazon Prime, haha.

Now I have the crappy one sitting in my garage. Maybe I'll make it into a $30 beverage holder...

Here's the reproduction from Carpenter. Looks like the nylon to me here, too.

I was looking at the broken coupling in your picture some more - that must be a thrill when it lets go, depending on what you are doing at the time.

I've used a plastic one, like the one in the picture from Carpentar, for about 10 years and 40,000 miles. Maybe you got a bad one or I got a good one or you have something else going on. I keep a spare (original type material) in the glove box just in case.

I'll keep the nylon as a spare in the truck, good call.

Yeah I think there might be something else going on as well.

Thankfully I was only about a mile from home and it was mostly a straight drive. Definitely exciting though.

There's a 65 or 66 for sale on the street around the corner from me right now... Looks to be in rough shape, and they're asking $1800.
