EGTs! Do I need a gauge?intercooler?

I've been doing some reading on the forum, about EGTs and people installing intercoolers on these OBS Powerstroke trucks. Is this something that is greatly needed? I'm just getting used to the truck at this point, doI need to install a gauge to monitor these temps? The trucks regular temp gauge never gets above the "N" on Normal. Does this sound right?

Thanks,

Caleb

If your are chipped and tow then you need a gauge.

You have a bad t-stat

With out an IC I do hit high EGTs at 1200 when towing up big hills. I fixed my probe before my first tow based on what most people here recommend.

Intercooler will help with EGTs.

The first mods when obtaining an OBS are
1.intake
2.Down pipe
3.EGT gauge

You will see reduced gets with an IC system. If you have canned tunes be careful because your EGT can climb quickly to the red zone.

Is your truck all stock? Any mods like chip, bigger injectors, etc.? If you are all stock, you won't really have to worry about high EGTs much. When you start modding these trucks to make more power is when you need to monitor the EGTs.

I disagree. When heavy towing you need gushes. Mine has hit 1250 towing just 7 k in new Hampshire

As far as I know. My chip is pulled and have not tried it yet.

My mods listed in sig.

I don't know if injectors have been upgraded. PO didn't know much about the truck and bought it with what I found it to have.

Awww heck, stock no mods don't even worry about an ic. Millions of these ol rigs are running without any.
We towed so much crap over the years with these stock it's not needed..
Start modding, yeah gauge and ic sure. U till then save the change$

Your signature doesn't show up on your posts. Do have stock up pipes? If so are they leaking? All turbo connections good? Do you have a boost gauge?

I'm not trying to be a dick, but this is kinda what I was talking about in the "suggestions" thread about calling someone out and having accurate information to back it up.

A bone stock truck with no exhaust leaks causing loss of boost, and all the air from the turbo getting into the engine and not leaking at any of the Y pipe connections or plenums, should be able to tow heavy without needing an IC to keep EGTs in check. If not, then from the time they started putting Powerstroke engines in these in '94.5, they would have had so many of these engines melted down that by 1995 they would have started putting ICs on them from the factory. But, they didn't until the Super Duty trucks when they went to bigger injectors, bigger turbos, and different tuning, and they needed ICs.

an EGT gauge is a good idea. If you do have some kind of boost leak or something then EGTs will be a symptom of it. as far as the intercooler goes, I have pulled lots of weight around the mountains of East Tn and never really had any trouble. But if you start doing some mods like injectors and whatnot, then an intercooler will help you. As mentioned, in a healthy stock truck an IC is not needed but I would encourage an EGT gauge.

As far as the temp gauge goes, you might have a bad t-stat. idk. Mine runs around the N-O, and has for years, and seems to be doing fine. One of these days I will get a fancy tablet and monitor all these things while I drive.

Sounds like you need to learn more about your truck and be sure so you can be 100% when giving out advice. "As far as I know" just amounts to an uneducated opinion.

My truck is bone stock other than S&B Cold Air Intake, and 4 Inch Straight Pipe, downpipe back. I plan on getting gauges, because I don't think it's spooling like it should, but heck I don't know, this is my first turbo vehicle. First diesel too. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can, I am already pretty well versed in gas burners, and other maintenance, and some fab work, but I know almost nothing about diesels.

Funny you should mention not knowing what I have.

Found a license plate in the back seat middle fold down last week. Had previous owner phone number. Gave him a call this morning. He did all the mods and never touched the injectors. The owner I bought it from didnt wrench on it so nothing else has been done.

When on mobile you may not be able to see my signature with mods listed. WEll at least I don't see any when on mobile.
