F250 was stolen and wrecked, insurance wants to total it.

Hey guys, hopefully you can give me some advice. My 2001 f250 power stroke was stolen and wrecked, some front end damage and it might have had some damage done to the transfer case or tranny. What is really angering me is that I saw some quote for the truck totaled out and it was like $5300. What I'm trying to decide is if I should have the trucks ignition repaired and drive it, not sure if there could be major tranny or transfer case issues, or if I should haggle with insurance for more money. I can barely get into a power stroke for $8k and that's not gonna be a crew cab with 4x4 (what I had), you can count on that.. If you've been through something similar any advice would be great, this has been such a depressing few weeks (I loved that truck..).

Insurance companies usually try to get away with the smallest payment they can. Get some prices on comparable trucks and negotiate.

Running trucks in your area seem to run $12k-$14k, according to CL.
I would recommend searching and printing out ads to establish a value. I have been involved in a few oddball cult cars, and that is a required tactic to get a decent price out of them. Worst is old Subarus, the insurance companies want to total over a $500 dented fender. Some of those cars are going for stupid money now. Turbo Volvos are worse, with old diesel Rabbits nearly as bad.

What overall condition was the truck in before it was stolen? The engine alone would likely sell for nearly what the insurance company is offering you. Later model 7.3's are good as gold.

Tell the insurance company you won't accept their offer as it's completely unreasonable.

Hate hearing this.

Man I'm sorry to hear about this. I know what it is like to have a vehicle that grows on you. I'd tell the insurance company no way and I'd take the advice given here about valuation determination using prevailing asking/selling prices. I'd also go to dealers and find out how much they are selling + or would sell one like yours for. and try to get those #'s down on paper.

Best of luck, Todd.
