whatppens when you overlook stuff.

well ive been driving my newly built rig for a couple of months. fighting gremlins.

I was towing a buddys car lastnight when my reducer for the intake tube to the air filter fell off, and got sucked up into the wheel..

CHECK EVERYTHING AFTER A BUILD.

don't be like me, having another wheel overnighted.
luckily the shaft is straight and the bearings are still ok.

Ouch ... A case where speed kills!

It is always better to take ones time and double even triple check stuff!

Just glad it didn't disintegrate and get swallowed ...

that's one of the reasons I went innercooled! lol
if things ever did go awry, it would eat up the FMIC first.

sometimes when you do a complete build, you miss stuff.
sometimes its small, sometimes its huge!

but this gremlin took a big bite outta my rearend after midnight!

new wheel will be here tomorrow.

guess I need more experience.
ive been building cars for the better part of 2 decades, I always miss something....

atleast this time it wasn't a ground wire getting caught on the throttle linkage!
that put me into a wall.

Slow down dude you'll get a more harmonious outcome ...

I can't say I have never forgot things, I have, but in the last 3 decades of the 5+ I've been doing this stuff I can say I have not!
It's my life, my reputation, I take the time to check everything at least once!

Customers don't see it as forgetful, they see it as bad workmanship!

One of the things racing has taught me ... Slow down, you'll go faster!

this is just a hobby for me,
I don't do it professionally.
one day ill beable to built a ride with zero glitches...
I just need to get to your level!

looks like if my building goes as yours did it will happen soon lol
I try to learn from my mistakes, but while paying attention to the mistakes ive made in the past something new pops up! lol

my reputation as a machinist will not be compromised.
however, my ego is surely bruised

I'm not crunching on ya ... Just trying to point out getting in a hurry causes things to be forgotten, that's all!

We are human, we make mistakes, we need to check and recheck ourselves!
As a machinist you should know that, I know you don't measure once and cut ... At least I hope you don't!

I have also been a machinist and a machine shop manager ... Something I enjoy very much.

EDIT
As for bruised ego's ... That's how we don't forget!
I have many bruises ...

I have a small 1800 sf machine shop, 3 centerless grinders, 3 universal grinders, 3 surface grinders, a Bridgeport and a few drill presses.

we primarily machine YIG oscillator rods out of Alumina oxide and beryllium oxide.
one of the largest parts we make are .060 in diameter and .450" long
with 2 different angled tip grinds, and notches.. all +/- .003 at the most.
with .020 diamond embedded wheels, we cut then measure lol.
then adjust from there. one small hiccup of the wheel causes us to repeat.
we are pretty good at getting them to +/- .001 unless we have a fiasco.

I posted this in hopes that someone else does see it and does not make the same mistake I have.
ive learned, but I feel its important to share my f'ups along with my successes.

if I can get 1 person to save their wheel, its worth the humility lol

I totally agree ... It is worth it!
That's exactly what I do, try to prevent others from repeating the mistakes I have made.
I have found the best technique for failure prevention is to check and recheck ones self!

Nice collection ... I need a surface grinder bad.
I have a mill, couple of lathes, diamond tool grinders, etc..., etc....

Yea, ok, that's a bit different case, cut and measure is the way ... Not typical though!
It's obvious you know what I meant!

yea +1 for the intercooler ..

that reminds me of a heartache thread a guy wrote up on a medium truck with a wet sleve dt366(if that's right? i don't remember) anyway a bus engine ..

they went through and totally rebuilt the engine with new sleves and pistons .. ect .. new paint .. looked great .. went all out .. put a turbo on it ..

then something bad happened like this but he didn't have any intercooler .. all that and the fan blades got eaten for dinner for one very unlucky truck .. sad

glad you feed that nice new motor a healthy diet .. so it doesn't get hungry for hot impeller blades ..
