Allow me to take the contrarian view on this - I do *NOT* want a data connection (modem) in my truck as I'm uncomfortable with trading security/privacy for convenience.

Net: data connectivity massively increases attack surface & most automakers lack the engineering talent, Agile SDLC, and corporate hierarchy to secure these systems

We are losing the ability to control information collecting about us rapidly. If someone were to slam into me I would want them to have the "black box" since the lawyers can be purchased to defend anything. But my personal feeling is protect my own data and electronic tracks. Nearly impossible today. And the plethora of hackers make it easier and easier for the untrained to buy programs which could grant them access to your entire life. Imagine someone hacking your vehicle and defeating critical controls when you are in a traffic situation. Not likely but possible. Possible with the same results as miscreants who drop pumpkins off a bridge on vehicles doing 75 on an interstate highway. Security needs to greatly improve before I put my vehicle directly on the interweb.

The nightmarish hack scenarios you mention have been demonstrated.

- Shifting a late model Jeep transmission into neutral as it as being driven uphill and then putting it into a ditch.

- Complete control of a late model Chevy Impala.

I like the air gap between my vehicle and the interweb.

This is now available in the 2019 F250’s. I watched it in person myself today. Now we just need to figure what needs to be added to the 18’s to get it to work.
