Fuel filler neck question

Ok I am fixing the fuel pump on my grandfathers 92 ranger when I pulled the filler neck I took off the metal filler piece and when I did I notice the inner hose was not attached to the metal filler at the bottom. The inner hose was just hanging in there. I tired to pull it up and attach it but they are the same diameter. Is it not suppose to attach?

I don't know if it's related or designed this way, but on my '96 if I over fill the tank gas splashes on the ground. Almost like it's designed to so you don't get gas on you or running down the side of the truck.

Jared--Not sure if our designs are the same; however, on my '97 Ranger, there was an inner hose and an outer hose. Only the outer hose attached to the gas tank with a clamp. The inner hose just stuck down into the tank.
This is pretty close to what I bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Gas-Fuel-Tank-Filler-Neck-Hose-Pipe-for-Ford-Ranger-Mazda-Pickup-Truck-/131313135727?hash=item1e92df706f:g:dIMAAOSwepJXUhG v&vxp=mtr. The longer, skinnier hose sticks down into the tank while the outer hose clamps to the flange on the gas tank.

John--I had the same problem. Your filler hose needs to be replaced. It cracks at the point where it is clamped to the gas tank. I put a new one on (a $40 or so generic version from eBay)...no more leaks when I let the gas pump run until it auto stops.
