Hey guys!

I picked up my '62 yesterday evening. Crawled around the motor when I got it home and it seems somewhere down the line the original 292 was swapped with a mid 70's 302 with 351W heads. It also seems that the column and possibly transmission from a mid 70's Mustang were dropped in.

The truck runs, drives, starts and stops, so that's a plus- but I know I'm just now uncovering the stories. The truck isn't meant to be a restoration project, it has rust in the common places (front of the bed, floors), but the cab corners seem pretty solid. I purchased to make it a street rod/shop truck vibe and paint our business logo on the doors and generally enjoy with the family at events around town.

Looking forward to learning from all of you and contributing where I can!

Picked it up last night, complete with tool box and a bed full of home renovation trash.

Got the bed cleaned out this morning, the plastic drop-in bedliner removed (found the rust!) and removed the tool box to sell on CL.

The cruise-control wheel appears to be from a 75 Mustang? Definitely going to get this swapped back to an original wheel.

Truck is mostly straight and solid.

Photo the previous owner snapped of the interior.

Fbreezy Welcome to and the Slicks Forum.

Your truck looks more like a 64 to me than a 62. The bed is 64, I believe the grill is 64, steering wheel could have come from a van as well.

Nice looking truck, hope you have have mucho fun with it.

Agree with John that your truck appears to be a '64 for the same reasons as he stated. You have the top half of the bright metal windshield molding trim that would have come on a '64 Custom Cab. Likewise, I think the Custom Cab trim plate under your speedometer bezel is from a '64 - but I could be wrong. Post the information from your warranty plate on the edge of the driver's door and someone will decode it for you; then we'll all know a lot more. You might also want to check the warranty plate VIN against the VIN on your frame and against the DMV's title VIN just to make sure all three are in agreement. Have fun with your new toy.

Wow, thanks guys! After closer inspection I'm in agreement with both of you. I've attached the door plate data so you can pick through it as well.

F10CN500358

114 J F100 B81 A 12
5000 135 3800 24

From looking around that means the truck is a Jan '64 truck? Also, how do I navigate this now with the DMV? I got the truck registered yesterday and they had zero issues, but the truck didn't have a title and in Georgia it looks like anything '62 and older doesn't require it.

Not likely to sell it anytime soon, but I'd like to shoot straight with the next guy. Thanks again!

Here's a decode of your warranty plate as to how it left the factory 52 years ago (there's no guarantee that all of it is the same now): F10 = F100 2 wheel drive truck. C = 292 cubic inch, 2 bbl, Y-block V8 engine. N = Norfolk, Va assembly plant. 500358 = January, 1964 assembly date (as you found out). 114 = wheelbase in inches. J = Rangoon Red exterior color. F100 = 5000 pound GVW rating in a ½ ton truck. B81 = Custom Cab. A = 3 speed manual transmission. 12 = 3.89 gears in a Ford 9 inch non-limited slip axle. 5000 = GVW rating. 135 @ 3800 = NET horsepower rating and rpms where achieved. 24 = Jacksonville, Fl, the District Sales Office from where the truck was ordered. It was not a special order vehicle. Can't say I can tell you anything about the Georgia DMV, but I assume you're not changing the VIN, just its model year. They should have been able to figure that out if they'd tried as the information is readily available. Good luck!

I'd say if you get or got tags for it, don't sweat it, enjoy the ride, deal with it when it time to sell. my 2

Impossible! 1974/78 Mustang II's were not available with Speed Control.

F10 = F100 2WD

C = 292 2V

N = Norfolk VA Assembly Plant.

500358 = 1964, assembled February 1964 (February 1964 serial number range: 500,000-509,999).

114" Wheelbase.

J = Rangoon Red.

F100 2WD .. 5,000 lbs. GVWR

E81: E = Red Crush Vinyl & Red Check Stripe Woven Plastic / 81 = 81B Custom Cab.

A = Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission.

12 = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 3.89-1 / 3,300 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

5,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

135 net HP @ 3,800 RPM

24 = Jacksonville FL Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

*Steering wheel (possibly the column) with wood grained Speed Control/horn pad is from 1978/79: F100/350 Ranger XLT or Lariat; Econoline Chateau; Bronco Ranger XLT.

It's possible if the column is from the same vehicle, it has a tilt wheel. Hold the steering wheel with one hand, press the T/S handle forward with the other to see if the wheel moves.

Thank you guys for all the info! I'm definitely interested to learn more about the steering column swap and the transmission. The truck is at a local garage now just getting all the safety stuff done so I'll dig in there when I get a chance.

This place is incredible, thank you all again.
