The new radiator I installed last year has 2 hose attachment points under the cap, one for the overflow and one "extra". The extra one came with a cap to block it off, but over time the cap cracks and starts to leak. Anyone have any clever ideas how to stop this? Can I run another overflow hose, or is that not a good idea? Thanks!
That's not an "overflow" hose. It's a port used on 460 trucks for coolant bypass. I would just get another cap from the auto parts store and install it.
Not to hi-jack this thread, but what exactly is the purpose of the bypass? Two of the three 460 trucks I have do not have the bypass. They are all auto trans so it's not that. Just wondering.
The rubber caps are junk! They last about a month, maybe, and then they get all cracked up and leak. I'll try a silicone one and see if that lasts longer. Is there any other way to block off that hole?
I completely agree that a more permanent solution than the caps is needed. Also, there are coolant caps and vacuum caps. That makes a difference in them lasting. I'd prefer something better than the coolant caps.
Take it to your local radiator shop and have them solder it up, it'll only take them a couple of minutes ... If you do it yourself, don't over heat it or you'll be awful upset!
My '89 F250 had the same setup and the same leak. I used a 3 inch piece of coolant hose, a bolt in the end and two hose clamps. Doesn't look great but works fine .
