Won't start won't stay running

What's up power stroke fam. Need your help I have a 1999 F250 Super Duty 7.3 liter this is what happen, was leaving the job site the truck started just fine ran for about 3 city blocks stopped at a stop sign and it started to run ruff like it was out of fuel but had a half tank then poof it shut off. After towing the truck home and trying to start it I could hear a relay clicking very sporadic the service engine light came on then when off and the truck started and the exact same thing happened started running ruff and shut off. Where should I start other than taking it to the shop? 🤔

To successfully begin the diagnostic process, a suitable Scantool would be required to retrieve stored codes in the PCM and monitor some data points. Otherwise, you would be throwing parts at it.

You can try to ice the IPR to see if it improves since this occurred when warm/hot.

Look at the oil level. If that is good, look at the wiring that leads to the under valve cover harnesses, make sure those connections are tight. What, if any, type of diagnostic equipment do you have access to?

Ok checked the I level it's spot on did an oil change about a month ago but checked it again

Unfortunately I only have a multi meter I have been working on restoring a older car that doesn't have a on board diagonistic port or computer. Looks like it's time to purchase one. Can you guys recommend a diagonistic tool I should add to the tool box. I'm all about my truck it has been rock solid since I bought it and that 7.3 is a beast

The cheapest way to go if you have a laptop with Bluetooth you can get an Elm 327 OBD connector and run Forscan or a Droid based tablet or phone and get Torque pro. Forscan is free, Torque pro app is $4.99 and the connector is anywhere from $20-$100 depending how much quality you are willing to spend for.

This is the OBD II adapter I use with my iPhone, so far it works well:

Veepeak Mini WiFi OBD2 OBD II Scanner Scan Tool Adapter Check Engine Light Diagnostic Trouble Code Reader for iOS iPhone iPad and Android https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WPW6BAE..._ygVFxbD54HJTE

I use the forscan lite app also, it was $5 and again works very well.

Hope this helps some

OBDLink MX WiFi will get it done with iOS, and you can leave it plugged in permanently because it won't drain the battery. I'm not regurgitating a brochure here, I have the MX Bluetooth and I've tested the battery drain from this device - zilch.

OBDII tools link in my signature is worth a click, as is the last link in my signature.

Is your fuel pump running? Is your fuel bowl filling up?

These trucks don't speak the true OBD II language and some code readers can't communicate with them. You may want to look into buying your own setup, it will pay you back in spades.

Do a forum search for forscan and torque pro. These will give you some great and relatively cheap options.
