Trouble Filling Up

Trouble Filling Up
I got a 92 f350 CCLB with the 7.3 idi about a month ago. When I try to put fuel in the tanks (happens with both tanks) the pump will shut off like the tanks if full within a second or two of clicking it into place.
I'm wondering if this is just an issue with modern pumps and compatibility with a 25 year old truck or if there is a clogged line somewhere that prevents air from returning to the tank and keeps shutting the pump off prematurely...or if there is some other issue I'm not aware of.
Any ideas? I'm guessing mine is not the first truck this has happened to.
Thanks!

Happens to most. I find that by holding the pump nozzle up instead of letting it rest against the bottom of the filler neck, that it usually fills without kicking off. But not always. Some of it seems to depend on the pump, how level the truck is sitting, which tank I fill first, the moon, the tides, which foot I'm standing on, and possibly the favor of a supernatural being.

If I shove the filler all the way in, it kicks off, if it's too far out fuel spits out, there is a small sweet spot that will allow me to fill at full speed.
I've also discovered that of I ramp up the fill speed I have better luck, of i try to go full speed right away it clicks off.
These trucks have a hose inside the filler hose that the fuel goes through, the air in the tank will travel through the outside hose and out the through the fill hole. if either one gets even slightly pinched there a pain to fill.
Interestingly I can fill at most truck stops with the big nozzle but i can only use the first click, such is still faster then the small nozzle wide open.....

I have the same issue with my '86 dually...the front tank is a pain to fill.. at one station it took me almost 20 minutes to fill the front tank because the nozzle kept shutting off, and the tank was "barfing" if I tried to fill it too fast..made a mess all down the side of my truck from the spilled fuel.
I have heard it has something to do with the tank/filler vent.. its a bad design and must be modified to fix this problem..

There's a plastic vent tube inside the fill tube. It's only pressed in and is plastic so if it works its way loose and falls into the tank it becomes a b*tch to fill the tank. Properly installed and working there really isn't a issue.

Can't get fuel in the tanks? Check out the filler neck vent tube.

Some guys like to mod it with an external vent.

What happens is the frothy spray of diesel is filling both the filler neck and vent tube. Gasoline comes out in more of a straight path where the diesel spreads out more after leaving nozzle. Components are same for both gas and diesel vehicles.
The 3/4" black plastic accordion vent tube is about 18" long and follows along top of fill neck in a channel. When the larger diesel nozzle is placed in filler neck the tip is angled toward vent opening. The spray pattern is larger and more foaming than gas, so covers most of the path for fuel or air to pass.
There is also a 1" rubber hose that is shorter and attaches only to fill neck. It does not protrude into tank like the smaller hose does.
I have never had any issues filling my `86 like a lot of people mention. I just had both tanks out. The rear vent tube(long accordion type) was a pita to shove back in. Just wanted to get the tank back in truck and didnt care if vent tube was all kinked up or not.
Its possible that some of the tanks in question may not have the vent hose intact anymore. Or if the vent hose has fallen and is submerged in fuel, it becomes useless.

i found back in 1988 the easiest way to fix this is to carry a piece of 6X6 in the bed of the truck. when getting fuel, pop the 6X6 down in front of the driver side rear tire and pull up on it. this raises the driver side just enough to let the fuel into the tank at full nozzle flow and change the way the vent works. .

This is most likely correct, but when built my flatbed I raised the filter point about 5 inches because mine had a mood, especially if it was nose down when filling, when the tub bed was on it. No problem now, indeed fills faster than some new vehicles.
