High Idle Mod

High Idle Mod
Hey guys, my wife has COPD and doesn't breathe well in hot and/or humid conditions. Sometimes, I'm leaving my wife in the truck with the air conditioning running for 5, 10, 15 minutes while I run into a store or get the camper hooked up to shore power. I understand a high idle mod is better for the engine than idling at regular speed. Most folks want the high idle for warming up the truck in cold weather. Am I right in thinking that I need the mod if I'm going to continue having my wife sit in the truck with the engine and AC running?

Long idle times in warm weather, the high idle mod is the right thing for. In cold weather, the engine will high idle on its own due to temperature. (even though the high idle mod is still beneficial in cold weather for long idle times)
I don't really see a huge issue with the 5-15 minute idle times. Especially if you are going to be working the truck afterward - as in - pulling the camper.
Basically what you are trying to prevent is wet stacking, simplified, it's fuel washing past the cylinders instead of being burned.
if you are really worried, a good way to tell if you are harming your motor is a used oil analysis (UOA) . I don't typically get those done, but a few people do. If you are getting a lot of fuel in the oil, extended idling could be the cause.

A pot only takes at little extra time to do, and is worth it. These trucks idle really poorly around 1100 rpm. I have a pot and like most mine is set around 1200. I use it all the time in SE PA.

I installed my pot today. I used the 50K ohm pot that so many other guys have used. It works well, but the speed range is unreal. When I turned the pot I went way up close to 3000 RPM. I think 1200 RPM will be the sweet spot. However, I wonder how it would work if it was done like the SVE Bulletin shows with a 5K pot and a 240 and 360 ohm resister in series with the pot like below.
