Any good engine rebuild books?

So on the edge of my first time buying an engine outside of a vehicle, I am starting to look for a resource to better acquaint myself with the finer things in life, like engine rebuilding. I have looked on Amazon and I have seen some nice reviews of a few books, but how different is a gas engine rebuild vs a diesel engine rebuild, more so an IDI engine rebuild.

Thoughts on any good literature out there I should pick up

Well, for starters how about the 6.9 Diesel Engine manual. It's a good freebee. I have read various opinions on it, but for $20 I found the Haynes Techbook Diesel Engine Repair Manual to be very helpful. It is available at most parts stores and has well explained basics on rebuilding.

I think I have the 6.9 diesel engine manual already in paperback, looked familiar. I looked at Amazon and a lot of people complaining about the haynes, I figure for $28 though, really can't go too wrong.

Would you steer me away from one of the gas engine rebuild books or dvds for basic understanding? or are they to far different from a rebuild perspective?

Also what about the Powerstroke rebuild book?

Haynes / Chilton will give you all of your service limits and torque specs + teardown and install stuff. I highly recommend. I have the Haynes and have no reason to complain. A bunch of people made a big deal because one of them instructs people to pull the IP gear cover to remove the IP, when, by popular opinion of most enthusiasts, that is not the "right" way.

The Haynes tech book I linked was correct with the IP procedure. It covers GM 6.2/6.5, Ford 6.9/7.3 and early 7.3 DI. It is a great entry level book in my opinion.

No book is going to teach you the intricacies of engine building, it takes experience.

With that said, Read everything you can get your hands on, good bad or indifferent, It all matters, Then read it all again ...

Then dive into with someone that does know what they are doing.

Engine building is an art!

Any monkey can put a motor together ... Very few can keep them together!

while it does take experience, there are books out there that go in depth on how to get the most power out of something.

this is one of my bibles.
he goes in depth on how to port heads, how to gasket match everything,
what some of the issues are and how to correct them. its a very good book, and i learned lots..

this book is based on his decades of drag racing.

now is there one for an IDI??? i wish lol

I didn't say there wasn't any good books out there ... All they can do is teach you the science behind it ... Not the nuances that keep them together!
