Seriouisly looking at a 4.2 truck, some info please.

I'm looking at a 2001 F150 here at a local dealer.

I just need the truck as a basic commuter, I won't be doing alot of hauling with it, just light stuff.

Anyway it has the short cab, the short bed, and the sport/flareside package.

Real sharp truck.

I was just wondering if the 4.2 is a reliable motor, and if it is any good. I have a 4.6 motor in my tbird and my crown vic and the motor is a tank. It will go 250k no problems.

I was wondering if the 4.2 splitport was as durable, and if these trucks in general were prone to much problem.

Thanks.

Justin

i dont know about the newer models, but.......the reason i found this site was to post a complaint (along with many other owners) about the 1997 with the 4.2. this motor historically blows gaskets resulting in engine failure i.e. bent rods. Ford is well aware of this defect and refuses to issue a recall.

I heard that the problems plaguing the 97 4.2s has been corrected before 2001. No personal experience with this, because my truck is only a month old

GET THE "SPORT" MODEL. IT COMES WITH 17" WHEELS, CAPTAINS CHAIRS, HAS HIGHER SUSPENSION, BETTER TIRES, SUN ROOF AND FULLY LOADED. THE CAPTAINS CHAIRS ARE UNBEATABLE. ALL THE OTHER SEATS ARE SQUISHY SOFT AND YOU WILL SINK TO THE FLOOR IN 6 MONTHS. YOU GET A LOT OF TRUCK WITH THE "SPORT" PACKAGE. I LOVE MINE AND THE MOTOR RUNS GREAT. I RACED A TRITON V8 LAST NIGHT AT THE TRACK AND HE ONLY BEAT ME BY 1.02 SECONDS. THAT'S PRETTY CLOSE, AND HIS TRUCK WAS BEEFED UP.

DEFINETALY GET THE SPORT MODEL.
